About Diego Alcala
TLDR: I'm someone that likes to constantly learn and challenge myself, and someone that thrives working in small collaborative teams.I am an experienced researcher with 10 years of combined undergraduate and graduate research. I've had the opportunity to collaborate in various teams with talented colleagues from 8 universities worldwide and have developed solid research skills by tackling a diverse set of research topics: autonomous rovers, atmospheric effects on loudspeakers, growth of directed complex networks, nonlinear spin waves in thin films, and macroscopic quantum tunneling. These have allowed me to sharpen and develop strong written communication skills with 4 first author and 4 coauthored publications.I'm a lifelong learner with a love for teaching others. Throughout my entire time in community college and university I tutored students in math and physics, and taught a GRE math prep course. In graduate school I had opportunities to be a teaching assistant, helping with lectures and holding office hours. My love of learning and taking on challenges spurred me to take every math and physics class I could in undergrad, allowing me to receive both a BS in Mathematics and BS in Physics 2013.A simple 1-semester coding class in 2007 sparked a life long passion for learning to program; with experience in Python 9yrs, Linux 9yrs, LaTeX 6yrs, FORTRAN 5yrs, Bash script 5yrs, HPC SLURM 5yrs, Mathematica 4yrs, MATLAB 3yrs, C++ 3yrs, and recently picking up Java. Apart from that single initial class, I've developed my programming skills entirely outside of the classroom, through real-world hands on experience in research roles and personal hobby projects like scripting and game design.
Listed skills include Linux, Spanish English, C++, Fortran, and 3 others.

Diego Alcala work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Consultant
Working with experienced construction managers to create a startup utility construction company.- Educate myself and learn about all facets of creating a startup business and the utility construction industry.- Initiate contact and work closely with consultants at the East Colorado Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for support.- Lead author on our business plan and 3 years of financial projections: sales forecasts, operating expenses, cash flow, and income statements.- Purchase, configure, and maintain a tower server running Windows Server for bidding and takeoff software.
Professional Tutor
- One-on-one tutoring sessions in math (arithmetic to calculus), physics (algebra and calculus based), and introductory statistics.- Collaborate with other tutors to create 1-hour workshops on various topics: study skills, time management, test taking strategies, etc.- Work with advisers to provide additional support to help students overcome additional struggles, i.e., financial, family-difficulties, health, etc.- Help students understand career path options, study skills, strategies for stress, and test taking strategies.- Maintain records and logs of tutoring sessions.
Graduate Research Assistant
My researched focused on understanding how many-body interactions alter the dynamics of quantum tunneling of bosons: modeling, simulating, and analyzing ultra cold atomic systems. I was involved with multiple collaborations spanning 4 universities, publishing 6 articles which covered various topics of macroscopic quantum tunneling. • Analyzed and collaborated on the first realization of macroscopic quantum tunneling, demonstrating how many-body interactions necessarily altered the tunneling dynamics. Used a combination of analytical JWKB calculations and simulations to support the hypothesis that many-body interactions altered the tunneling process. • Implemented some of the first simulations of many-body quantum tunneling dynamics using compression algorithm (DMRG) to simulate a wide range of single many-body quantum observables. Used mines high performance computing architecture to simulate and analyze several GB of data with Python, Mathematica, and FORTRAN. • Provided future MQT experiments with guidelines on how to perform quantum tunneling in various trap configurations. Used rapid parameter space exploration via optimization and minimization techniques to give a gross understanding of viable experimental trapping configurations. • Modeled and simulated the interplay between quantum phase transitions the quantum tunneling process, allowing future experiments to probe quantum phase transitions using the dynamical process of quantum tunneling. Used high performance computing architecture with DMRG code to analyze the interplay between the Mott insulator to Superfluid quantum phase transition and quantum tunneling in both escape and double well configurations.
Tutor
Tutored students in one-on-one and group (3-5 individuals) sessions.- Introductory physics (algebra and calculus based)- Calculus I,II,III- Linear Algebra- College algebra and trigonometry
Lecturer
Taught a 6 week intensive course on Graduate Records Examination.- Prepared and held lecture 3 days per week for 10+ students.- Ran tutoring style group sessions for hands-on problem solving.
Ronald E. Mcnair Post-Baccalaureate Researcher
- Measured the effect of atmospheric pressure (via altitude) on the Thiele-Small parameters; a set of electromechanical parameters which describe the performance of loudspeakers.- Compared the use of 3 (direction calculation, added mass, and enclosure) methods with Woofer Tester 1 and 3, finding a consistent and statistically significant change.- Built enclosures to measure the Thiele-Small parameters of several speakers at altitudes of 4,600 and 9,600 feet.- 3rd place award for scholarship and written presentation of research.- Published thesis in 2011 McNair research Journal.
Nasa’S Colorado Space Grant Consortium Robotics Challenge
- Lead programmer for an autonomous rover to avoid obstacles while driving towards a predetermined heading.- Used Arduino to coordinate servos, collision detectors, and magnetic compass heading.- Collaborated with team members to design and build the robot.
(Trend) Training And Research Experience In Non-Linear Dynamics
- Modeled the growth of largely connected components in directed complex networks using FORTRAN.- Collaborated with a fellow TREND undergraduate researcher, graduate student, and advisers to write and debug FORTRAN code, analyzing data sets for systems of up to 2^23 node networks using python.- Won 2nd place for best overall research and presentation at TREND.- Coauthored and published article: Shane Squires, Katherine Sytwu, Diego Alcala, Thomas M. Antonsen, Edward Ott, Michelle Girvan, "Weakly explosive percolation in directed networks," Physical Review E 87 (5), 052127 (2013)
Tutor
Tutored students in campus tutoring center: College algebra and calculus.- Tutoring center had 2-3 tutors and 5-20 students at any given time.
