As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, I designed and synthesized a series of complex molecules whose luminescence intensity can be tuned by weak magnetic fields. This project required a deep understanding of the physical background of spin chemistry and structural organic chemistry, careful design of the target molecules using quantum-chemistry software (FireFly) and a laborious multistep synthesis. I characterized and investigated these new materials by a number of modern analytical methods, including ultrafast optical spectroscopy and time-resolved EPR. As a graduate student at Moscow State University, I worked on multiple challenging projects. One such project included the development of synthetic protocols for the commercial production of brassinosteroid plant hormone used in commercial agriculture. We have developed a protocol for selective 1,2-enone double bond reduction in microemulsion media using a water-soluble inorganic reducing agent. This innovation and a subsequent scale-up resulted in increase in production of the plant hormone by 1400% to 750 grams annually. During another project I discovered a synthetic method to produce a novel hybrid porphyrin chromophore system. This new dye was tested as a potential material for organic solar cells which resulted in a number of publications and an international patent.I also worked as a scientific consultant at a science museum "Live Systems" in Moscow. I developed a number of demostrations and spectacular experiments for their shows and build two showpieces for light perception and static electricity demonstartions.As my hobby, I enjoy flying small airplanes and is currently pursuing my private pilot certificate.
