I help organize administrative needs of the community garden. I chair the water committee, which organizing both immediate and long term water policies. As well, I install and organize both the underground and above ground piping needs. I am also involved in the tree, compost, animal welfare and education committees. As part of those committee's, I help maintain the community by trimming trees, clearing out weeds, planting new trees, creating compost piles, caring for animals, and organizing educational workshops. My PhD project was focused on the characterization of a plant disease-related signal transduction protein, the leucine-rich repeat receptor kinase APR219 from tomato. I used virus-induced gene-silencing in Nicotiana benthamiana to show that Apr219 has a role in plant basal immunity. To further understand the molecular function of APR219 I screened a tomato cDNA yeast two-hybrid library for interacting partners. Four of these partners were confirmed with pull down assays. Additionally I analyzed which amino acids were important for the irregular kinase activity of APR219 and how they affected interaction with interacting partners.
