As part of the EPSRC Vacation Internship scheme, I was able to gain experience working with university staff on an ongoing research project. My work within this project included contributing to the development of a c++ code simulating the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory of light scattering by small particles, for applications in laser-metal additive manufacturing. Additionally, I conducted a feasibility study into the use of acoustic levitation for the stabilisation of powder aggregates in zero-gravity additive manufacturing. This involved researching and developing a numerical simulation of the acoustic levitation process in Matlab to investigate the particle forces and assess the method’s suitability.
