About Douglas Turner
In 2010, Douglas Turner began writing art journalism, beginning with his culture blog, “The Architecture of Tomorrow.” The blog covered openings, general art news, and studio visits. His art and culture writing has appeared in independent print and digital publications. His writings can also be found in catalog essays, collections, and in the form of book introductions as well. In 2014, he launched AOT Project Salon. He began curating salon-style exhibitions in his 2 story wedge house in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the Lower East Side through a partnership with the LES Girls Club until 2020. He is a Guest Curator at Standard Space, a contemporary gallery in Sharon, CT, exhibiting contemporary works by emerging and mid-career artists across diverse media. His most recent project is the creation of the Black Femme Residency. Douglas also serves as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the M. Spencer Foundation. The foundation supports and funds non-profits serving at-risk young adults and their families. On a wider scope, his curatorial work in upstate New York and Connecticut inserts Black Women and BIPOC artists in otherwise white cis-gendered spaces. His curatorial practices at Standard Space typically launch the gallery’s season in September each year, exhibiting emerging and mid-career works by women of color. In the Spring of 2021, he launched the Black Femme Residency, hosted by the Wassaic Project in historic Dutchess County in upstate New York. Through collaborative projects in Amenia, New York, Sharon, Connecticut, and the surrounding areas, including galleries, residencies, and a host of art and cultural institutions, his projects intentionally give marginalized artists access to space, materials, and financial resources to create in welcoming, supportive and idyllic rural settings.
