Since I was young I've been fascinated with aquatic environments, so much so that it was almost inevitable I would end up studying Marine and Freshwater Biology at Glasgow University. In fact I enjoyed it so much I stayed on a little bit longer than expected and obtained my PhD in Aquaculture. More than a decade later I've continued to embrace my career in aquaculture by studying methods and and techniques to ensure this industry can rise above societal, economical and biological challenges.With the human population predicted to reach 9 billion by 2050, increasing the nutritional quality of farmed fish will be one of the most important challenges facing agriculture and food security. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations (UN) has predicted that aquaculture will need to significantly expand in order to meet the nutritional demands of a rapidly expanding human population. However, aquaculture is facing several critical issues which are preventing the industry's expansion. The work I have undertaken has sought to increase our understanding of fish under farmed conditions, pushing past biological bottlenecks to improve the sustainability, nutritional quality and welfare of animals within aquaculture.-I have significant field and laboratory experience, examining biochemical, physiological and genetic components of various marine and freshwater fish species. -I have successfully led teams of international research scientists in countries such as, Iceland, Germany, Austria and Norway-I have collaborated with various academic (e.g. Norwegian Marine Research Institute), industrial (e.g. Marine Harvest, Alltech) and governmental bodies (eg CEFAS, SEPA). I love learning and sharing this knowledge with co-workers, as well as meeting new people and hearing new perspectives. Throughout my career, I have enjoyed taking what I have previous learned and applying it to new subjects, creating imaginative and innovative projects. One of my main drives throughout my career has been to ensure that society understands the importance of aquaculture by transferring my research out of acedemia and into industrial settings, school classrooms and public events.Professional Skills: Project Management| Data Analysis| Science Communication| Team development| Creative thinking
