Easy Hard Science

I provide fun, approachable college prep courses for homeschoolers, home educators, and teachers around the globe. I've created video textbooks for chemistry and math. They are based on my experience as a college professor, where I learned exactly what one needs to know to succeed in higher education. I've been teaching and working with homeschool groups for decades, received some teaching training from the National Science Foundation (NSF), and I know how to connect with learners interested in science.

We won first place in the Chemicals & Advanced Materials category in the Western Division.

Jan 2012 - May 2017

Atmospheric Modeler

San Francisco, Ca

I worked as an air quality scientist analyzing big data sets at a northern California air quality regulatory agency. I led a research program for the newly regulated pollutant known as fine particulate matter (PM2.5). My team of scientists, engineers, and programmers investigated problems ranging from controversial restrictions on household-level activities to cost-effective controls on heavy industry point sources, with an emphasis on understanding meteorological and climatological impacts on atmospheric chemistry. My team supported environmental policy and permitting by conducting modeling, analysis, and data mining on a Beowulf-class computing cluster. MATLAB and ArcGIS were used on a PC network to analyze and visualize results. Academic research, mostly in conjunction with UC Davis, resulted in dozens of peer-reviewed research journal article publications and scientific conference presentations. My work with remote sensing (satellite) data was disseminated as a training seminar that I developed. It was recognized in the NASA Applied Sciences Program 2010 Annual Report.

May 2008 - Jun 2013

Chief Science Officer And Vice President Of Research & Development

Global Renewable Energy Services

I was one of three founding members of Bio-Friendly Fuel Partners for which I was Vice President of Research. The firm marketed renewable fuels in a rapidly growing sector that had a high level of regulatory uncertainty. I provided thought leadership and oversaw quality control testing at a time when best practices were being developed by industry.I sat on the Board of Directors and was Chief Science Officer when the company expanded threefold as Global Renewable Energy Services. As renewable fuels markets became unprofitable following the recent financial crisis, I pivoted the company to market value-added “green” solvents for petrochemical applications. I also negotiated a strategic partnership with a major university to develop biotechnology capabilities to process a common type of biomass harvested using patented equipment funded through a grant.

Jan 2005 - Jul 2008

Reasearch Staff, Post-Doctoral Researcher, And Phd Candidate

I completed a PhD in chemical engineering in four years, trained as a post-doctoral researcher, and then served as research staff at UC Davis.During my graduate studies, I invented algorithms for working with complex and voluminous data, long before terms such as "big data" and NoSQL existed. I studied control systems for chemical plants, emissions, and air quality. My post-doctoral and research staff positions were fully funded by research contracts I wrote to continue my dissertation research. I obtained over $500k funding through several sources to apply software tools I developed to study various air pollution problems throughout northern California. I designed studies, trained a team of graduate students to conduct the work, managed projects, and documented the findings.

Oct 2001 - Jan 2007

Research Engineer

Cdg Technology

I managed a wet chemistry and process engineering laboratory for the production of chlorine dioxide gas for water treatment and sanitation. I designed, hand assembled, and tested experimental apparatuses and trained others to use them safely. I kept the fledgling startup's R&D program moving forward in the face of constant interruptions. I developed systems and protocols to control air emissions from the processing equipment.
