Aaron Mullins is an award winning, internationally published psychologist. He is also a bestselling author for crime, mystery and thriller books. Having studied creative writing at Northampton University, he started Birdtree Books Publishing where he worked as Editor-in-Chief. During this time he gained media recognition, partnered with World Reader Charity and sponsored English lessons in an under-tree school in India, before moving on to new ventures. He also taught academic writing at Coventry University. As a fiction author he’s known for exploring the darker side of psychology in his work. He also creates business guides for entrepreneurs and writing guides for fellow authors.

The Bell At Stow

As the Deputy General Manager of The Bell at Stow, a 13 bed hotel with 110 seat restaurant and bar, I was responsible for managing all the hotel reception, housekeeping, kitchen and front of house staff. I was the face of the business and the first point of contact for our customers, dealing with guest enquiries, complaints and needs in a professional manner. I delivered excellent customer service through myself and my team, taking calls, making reservations and providing guest services. As a manager I also had full profit and loss accountability, completing weekly business sheets, monitoring cash handling, doing banking and creating rotas within the wage budget to ensure cover at all times. I maximised revenue through daily monitoring and altering of room rates and planning rates and promotions ahead of time for local events. I used Opera PMS to manage the hotel side of things and link it to our Collins dining system and our in-house till and stock systems, all of which fed into our business sheet which I reviewed daily. I used ReviewPro to monitor our feedback on various sites, including TripAdvisor and Booking.com, ensuring we respond within 24 hours. I used YesChef for food and drink ordering and Jacksons for ordering hotel and general items.

I lead, motivate and develop my team to ensure that my store is fully stocked up ready for trading the next day and we are achieving and exceeding store targets. I am also responsible for creating and delivering our store level communication strategies, to colleagues, customers and the wider community. I was previously the PR Ambassador for the store and more recently the Regional Great Place to Work Rep. I bring my psychology and consumer behaviour knowledge and experience to the job role, making recommendations for the store and the team to achieve even greater success. Having previously been a Store Manager I use my skills to increase sales, deliver a fantastic customer experience and ensure my colleagues enjoy working within our store.

I was the manager and editor-in-chief of my own digital publishing company I was responsible for strategy level decisions related to giving customers an amazing collection of unique ebooks and making them available for a wide range of devices, so they can be accessed from anywhere at any time. I was also head of the research and design departments, overseeing the work conducted by my researchers, authors, editors, artists, illustrators, graphic designers and photographers that carry out a wide range of services. The company had a very successful handmade gift shop which was stocked in 32 stores across the midlands. Featured in a number of newspapers throughout England and Scotland, Birdtree Books became a globally recognised partner of World Reader Charity and sponsored English classes in an under-tree school in India. Birdtree Books grew in strength and was eventually purchased by another company.

The role also included all aspects of HR, including banking. I delivered the best sales figures for a December my store had ever had in the 17 years it had been on that site, beating my targets by over 400%. Left this role when my own company became successful enough to be a fulltime job.

I helped lead a team of 40 store colleagues in a busy store, often as the only member of the management team in, while carrying out all store duties, running events and meeting sales and customer satisfaction targets. I was recognised for my visual merchandising skills and was sent to help open other stores on the region which were new or had been refurbished. Had to leave this job role when I moved to study for my PhD.

I gained qualifications and experience as an RAF Engineer, working on electrical and mechanical systems. This included training and mentoring of lower ranked recruits and promoting efficient teamwork. I traveled extensively during this time, conducting work in Norway, Sweden, Belgium, France and Northern Ireland.
