Worldwide primary point of contact for cities, regions and countries seeking to deploy Hyperloop, not just to transform their transport, but to radically enhance their economic competitiveness.Working in parallel with the world class team of engineers and technologists developing the Hyperloop transportation system itself, I work with public sector partners and private sector investors to develop the business cases for corridors around the world which will deploy the Hyperloop system. This includes directing and coordinating the expert teams defining the capital and operating costs of proposed systems, and projecting their demand, ridership and revenue. Additionally, I will liaise with any public sector bodies – such as Economic Development Agencies or Inward Investment Boards – which may be co-funding or supporting a project.Once the core elements of a project are defined and a comprehensive commercial, economic, technical and environmental business case produced, I then work with legal specialists and liaise with Governments on legislation to empower construction, and work in parallel with debt and equity providers to structure project finance packages.

Adviser on strategic business matters to CEO FCOS Services (Part of the UK Government Foreign & Commonwealth Office). Project involved upgrading the efficiency of worldwide service delivery to the FCO, other UK Government Departments, and third party clients. Wrote strategic business case for discussion with Foreign Secretary and FCO senior leadership, supported by financial modelling and implementation programming. Follow-through activities included coordinating detailed in-house implementation planning teams and defining the process by which the emerging proposals will be reviewed, approved and adopted by the FCO.

Stoke-On-Trent, United Kingdom

HS2 is the UK's proposed high speed railway from London to the North of England. Phase 1 runs to Birmingham; Phase 2 runs form Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds.Alan led the project to secure an HS2 service for the city of Stoke-on-Trent, when Phase 2A opens to Crewe in 2027. Acting as Project Director, Alan assembled, briefed, and coordinated the outputs of a team of engineers, transport specialists, economists and environmental experts. He then authored the business case, led presentations to Ministers, and acted as lead expert during negotiations with the Department for Transport and HS2 Ltd.In November 2015, the Department for Transport announced that: "We recognise the important role Stoke-on-Trent plays in the wider economic sub-region and welcome the way Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Cheshire East Council and other partners are working together to ensure that the benefits of HS2 are maximised. We want to see whether Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield could receive HS2 services as part of Phase Two and therefore the Secretary of State has asked HS2 Limited to explore how we might best serve Stoke-on-Trent."Discussions between the city and the Department are ongoing. Alan will continue to assist the City Council until the HS2 connection is definitively secured and confirmed in HS2 planning and legislation.

Operating internationally, mainly in Lagos and from UK HQ, responsibilities include initiation and analysis of major corporate investment projects, Government Relations as well as defining and leading delivery of a £50+m JV capital project and associated consumer product launch, in Nigeria, one of the worlds most dynamic, but difficult, business environments.Operating internationally, FIFO from a UK base, the role has evolved to include input into Group strategic decisions, thought leadership, and business planning for major Group investments – ranging from power generation plant, to relocation of key business functions on a global scale.

Alan James is a leading authority on high speed transport. From 2003 to 2010, he led the UK Ultraspeed project, coordinating expert engineering, technical and commercial teams, presenting the project at the highest levels of Government, and communicating the project to the public through extensive media coverage. UK Ultraspeed was the brand name for a proposed new national ground transport system, which drastically reduced journey times between major cities in Britain by operating at speeds up to 500km/h (311mph). Indicative journey times include:London to Birmingham 30 minutes; Newcastle to Leeds 25 minutes; and Heathrow to Tyneside, serving all major markets en route (Midlands, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and Teesside) 100 minutes. Using German Transrapid magnetic levitation [maglev], not rail, technology, Ultraspeed was designed to be faster than jet air travel over most UK short-haul routes, whilst producing as little as 20% of the emissions That's two and a half and four times quicker than rail, and between five and eight times faster than driving. Alan's role was to set the agenda for deployment of high speed transport on an intercity scale, to deliver both a quantum change in UK transport and a more sustainable balance between the North and the South, whilst significantly increasing the UK’s competitiveness as a location for business, investment and jobs.The UK Ultraspeed project reached procurement readiness in mid-2010, at which point Alan's assignment was complete.
