Assistant General Counsel
Current● General. I have both led and been an individual contributor on Microsoft’s Open Source, Standards, Open ML & Data Legal Team, which supports Microsoft’s open source and standards activities across the company and externally in the community. We partner with engineering groups, senior leadership, and external communities to develop and implement policies to enable Microsoft to engage in standards and open source at scale. ● Standards. I specialize in legal, policy, and business issues arising from standards and interoperability collaborations. I work closely with product teams on topics covering the entire standards lifecycle, including the formation of standard setting organizations, governance, technology submissions, patent licensing obligations, disclosures, antitrust, implementation issues, open source, corporate law and general counseling. This includes representing Microsoft in multiparty negotiations with information technology, content, and consumer electronics companies in areas including IoT, content protection, media formats, content distribution, data, communication protocols, and networking standards. In this role, I’ve establised and represented Microsoft in dozens of organizations, including the Joint Development Foundation, OASIS, W3C, AACS, UltraViolet, DVD-CCA, ISO/IEC, JTC1, MPEG, Alliance for Open Media, Open Web Foundation, 3MF, ECMA, IETF, Schema.org, Allseen Alliance, Open Connectivity Foundation, Open Compute Project, Green Software Foundation, Overture Maps, C2PA, and DASH-IF.● Open Source. We provide legal and policy support across the entire open source life cycle, including open source usage, contributions, releases, training, counseling, code scanning, license compliance, and community engagement. Under my leadership and in partnership with engineering groups, we scaled our open source compliance processes and operations from 500 requests per month to over 800,000 per month.
Board Member
CurrentAfter founding the Joint Development Foundation and leading it to become an organization with over 180 members that developed multiple industry leading standards and open source projects, we joined JDF with the Linux Foundation. As part of the Linux Foundation family, the Joint Development Foundation has accelerated its growth and has become the home for over 32 standards, specification, open source, and open data projects, and has produced a number of international standards via JDF's PAS submitter status.
President And Founder
I founded and led the Joint Development Foundation, which is a 501(c)6 non-profit foundation that enables standards and source code development collaborations to start and operate quickly and efficiently. Instead of spending months negotiating custom legal agreements, standards and source code development efforts can establish themselves using a choice of proven industry-standard terms and intellectual property options. By providing lightweight legal agreements, a turnkey series LLC corporate infrastructure, and on-demand staffing and accounting options, the Joint Development Foundation provides projects with a “standards and source code organization in a box.” Since its founding, the Joint Development Foundation has helped over 180 companies to collaborate and get work done.
Associate
As an Associate, I advised technology and media clients on a wide variety of matters regarding copyright, trademark, privacy, electronic security, and technology risk assessment. I counseled major cable operators on regulatory and legal issues related to the operation of Internet broadband services. I assisted in the representation of technology companies in multi-industry standard setting organizations, particularly with respect to digital audio and video distribution standards, and enforced copyright and trademark rights online. I negotiated and drafted intellectual property related agreements, including software licenses, outsourcing agreements, information technology procurement transactions, and content licenses. And, by combining my technical and legal background, I was able to translate between lawyers and technologists.
Consultant
Using my technical background and education, I joined Lotus’s Architected Solutions Group where I prepared and conducted software presentations for enterprise scale knowledge management projects. I collected project requirements and acted as an intermediary between clients and software developers. I also worked with quality assurance teams, developed internal software applications, and administered systems.
