    • Facilitating marker selection meetings in subject fields and foreign language fields during which state-sanctioned committees identify and approve examples of score points. • Developing orientation sets with respect to established, state-mandated score point exemplars that help scorers understand how to apply scoring rubrics while scoring open response items. • Conferring with scorers, one-on-one, on how to apply holistic scoring methods and scoring rubrics toward the task of scoring open responses. Fulfilling this role requires maintaining a delicate balance of respecting state-mandated expectations while encouraging scorers to use their own abilities to discern a response’s score, and of ensuring a scorer independently recognizes the correct score without my interference or aid. • Using and exercising state-mandated scoring rubrics to calibrate scorers, including conducting classroom style discussions on how to apply the rubric while scoring various, sample responses.Scoring Session Director Duties • Establishing the scoring session work schedules and assignments, as well as procuring services for temporary administrative help. • Developing and maintaining Excel spreadsheets tracking scorer experience and orientation materials: these spreadsheets have significantly enhanced the scoring department’s ability to handle increasingly complex and more frequent scoring sessions. • Directing the overall daily operations of scoring sessions, including making decisions about schedule changes, staffing changes, and overcoming logistical problems.
