See our paper here: https://elifesciences.org/articles/512142. The "Vitality" clinical trialThis trial investigates brain-body interactions (among many other biological measures) during Qigong and other mind-body practices, with a focus on improving symptoms of fatigue in cancer survivors. The trial uses a non-inferiority complex where we compare two groups: one which practiced Qigong and one which practiced pilates. The hypothesis is that Qigong is as good as pilates at improving fatigue, yet Qigong is far more physically accessible to cancer survivors and can easily be done within the comfort of one's home. We are currently analyzing our data and preparing a paper for publication. 3. The TMS and Sensory Perception projectOur ongoing clinical trial combines human magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), non-invasive brain stimulation (transcranial magnetic stimulation; TMS), and biophysically principled computational neural modeling. We are exploring the relationship between low-frequency brain rhythms and sensory perception, and plan to optimize commonly used TMS paradigms to impact sensory processing and perception in a similar manner as endogenous rhythms. We are presently acquiring and analyzing pilot data as well as improving our experimental paradigm. Show less

As a part of this initiative, my co-leader and I guided a small team of approximately ten Brown students in a semester-long research project. Our approach to understanding current social entrepreneurship trends in the Philippines was threefold: 1. We designed and administered a survey to a large set of individuals and enterprises in the Philippines that partnered with either Kaya Collaborative or Ashoka Philippines2. We conducted online research to investigate current entrepreneurship trends in the Philippines. This necessitated that we review the current academic literature on the topic as well as the various public news sources that report on local entrepreneurship trends. In this effort, we divided our team into small groups that each focused on a different thematic aspect of the entrepreneurship landscape3. We selected several individuals and enterprises from the survey to receive Skype/phone interviews. Our group met weekly to discuss our progress and synthesize our findings. Our research culminated in the writing of a report that would serve as the foundation for Kaya Collaborative’s subsequent 2014 summer fellowship projects, where individuals partnered with many of these social enterprises to drive specific high-impact projects.
