Dylan Buck Work Experience Details
  • Summoner
    Creative Director, Copy & Concept
    Summoner Apr 2024 - Present
    Los Angeles, California, United States
    Coming soon
  • Freelance
    Consultant - Creative, Copy, Strategy
    Freelance Jan 2021 - Present
While developing some projects of my own, I've been working with a variety of organizations, agencies, and startup clients -- established operations such as Arcade1Up, Codashop, and Rivian, as well as newcomers like Summoner Studio and Screenshot Labs -- to define brands, develop strategy, write copy, and consult on creative; the collaboration with Potion Projects and G2 Esports on their music video deserves a special mention.
  • Friendly Pixel
    Director - Marketing & Community
    Friendly Pixel Feb 2022 - Jan 2023
Directed marketing, managed social media + community + press + content creators, wrote copy, edited video, streamed gameplay, and generally flexed into whatever role or execution was needed during early access. Stepped into the indie scene by consulting on the upcoming social deduction game TRUST NO BUNNY, the first title from brand new studio Friendly Pixel; it was a thrilling challenge to search for unique strategies to break into the market and build a community from the ground up without the usual AAA budget.
  • Riot Games
Senior Writer - Legends Of Runeterra Publishing
    Riot Games Feb 2019 - Nov 2020
    Los Angeles, California
Nothing beats shipping - except for launching. Had the immense privilege of helping define the brand voice and marketing for the first new Riot game in a decade, providing copy and creative for the official launch and beyond. In addition to contributing to cross-disciplinary product teams for Legends of Runeterra, during this time I provided craft leadership as part of Riot's Writing Community of Practice, defining the standards by which we evaluated performance, as well as mentorship to junior writers/creatives. --Working closely with other writers, brand strategists, and creative directors, helped define the voice for Riot’s upcoming games in the League of Legends universe: Legends of Runeterra, Teamfight Tactics, and Wild Rift--Concepted, pitched, wrote, and edited scripts for major announcement videos, expansion trailers, and user acquisition marketing--As the sole copywriter on the team, wrote virtually all copy for all publishing/marketing material on social media, the app store, and the website, as well as email CRM campaigns--Wrote (and ghostwrote) articles on game design and dev values, plus patch notes--Bonus: Supported the dev team by writing copy for the majority of in-game cosmetic content, such as emotes and the pet-like guardians (including their names and personalities)
  • Riot Games
Writer - League Of Legends Publishing
    Riot Games Feb 2018 - Feb 2019
    Los Angeles, California
R&D was fun, but nothing beats shipping. Moved to the main marketing team on the main game, publishing the core of League of Legends: champions, game modes, and season start. --Wrote and edited scripts and copy for every champion’s spotlight video, gameplay reveal, and promotions within the game client for that year (about one a month)--Wrote and edited copy for the Nexus Blitz game mode--Wrote and edited copy for the Clash game mode--Co-wrote the script and consulted on-set for the live action Clash launch trailer--Wrote and edited all copy for Season Start 2018--Wrote personality & power fantasy blurbs for all of League’s champions at the time (roughly 150), which went one to be used in places like the revamped LoL “new player site”
  • Riot Games
    Writer - Creative Development Publishing
    Riot Games Jan 2017 - Feb 2018
    Los Angeles, California
Decided I liked writing more when it was less HR. Changed course from internal communications to marketing & publishing. New role ended up as a combination of strategy and creative output. --Lead copyeditor on unreleased title--Led and documented strategy work for Creative Development department reorganization--Wrote editorial for various Creative Development experimental projects--Directed a short documentary on the development of a lore-based music video
  • Riot Games
Communications Associate - Writing And Strategy
    Riot Games Oct 2015 - Dec 2016
    Los Angeles, California
Increased responsibility as a full-time employee. Similar work, but triple the scale and impact.--Continued to administrate and develop Riot’s intranet platform, editing and posting virtually all major internal communications--Created an intranet “workshop” and series of training modules to scale and democratize internal communications--Co-led the migration of the company to Slack as the single internal communications platform (including another workshop and series of training modules)--Supported various company reorganizations by providing communications strategy counsel
  • Riot Games
    Communications Contractor - Writing
    Riot Games Sep 2014 - Oct 2015
    Los Angeles, California
Contracted for general comms work as part of the Brand and Communications team. A grab bag of different entry-level responsibilities. --Managed the main player-facing general inquiry inbox--Administrated Riot’s nascent intranet platform, editing and posting major company and department announcements--Researched, wrote, and edited “culture stories” that reflected company values (as exemplified by specific employees) in an easy-to-read comic book form--Prepared submission material for Great Places to Work / Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list
