Profile bio

About Ellen Meyer

As a child, I never thought about growing up and wanting to be an engineer. I had planned several prospective careers in my youth, ranging from normal (author), to slightly more unusual (archaeologist), to I still don't understand what I was thinking (pole vaulter). Despite these changes, several things have remained constant throughout my life. One of those is a love of learning. Whether I am experimenting with the chemistry of baking, studying heat exchangers, discussing a mathematical theorem, or practicing a new sewing technique, I welcome each new piece of knowledge eagerly, and I am grateful that the world is so endlessly interesting. My interest and aptitude in math and science, along with my desire to solve problems creatively, has led me to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and I couldn't be happier! Here on campus, I am involved in UR Robotics and I have been a TA for two classes: The Engineering of Bridges and Thermodynamics. In my free time I enjoy reading, sewing, hiking, playing card games, and doing crossword puzzles. Please feel free to reach out! I am always open to new opportunities and meeting new people.

Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States

I was R&D intern in the Science of Extreme Environments Research and Innovation (SEERI) program. I worked in the field of pulsed power doing mechanical design work on components of Sandia's Z machine.

Jun 2022 - Jan 2023

Quality Engineer Intern

I performed research to gain an understanding of what measurement uncertainty is and how it can be calculated. I applied my understanding to calculate measurement uncertainty for the calibration of several different gages, such as calipers, micrometers, and threaded plug gages. I also researched, understood, modified, and implemented calculations to find the probability of false acceptance (PFA) for each calibration. This was necessary to show that the calibrations comply with ANSI/NCSL Z540.3: Requirements for the Calibration of Measuring and Test Equipment. Finally, I created user-friendly excel workbooks that will be used to show compliance. Users are required only enter a few parameters about the calibration, and then the workbook performs the necessary calculations for uncertainty and PFA and clearly displays the results.

May 2021 - Aug 2021

Product Engineer Intern

Simsbury, Connecticut, United States

I focused on improving and updating the written documentation and training material for the operation of a rotary swager (a machine used in the manufacture of detonating cord). After learning about the process and addressing any missing or outdated details in the documentation, I created a training video for the operation of the swager. I conducted time studies and improved the excel formulas used in the time study spreadsheets. I was also a member of the team for a week-long Kaizen event where we worked to redesign the layout and flow of a production cell.
