The last six months I have been working at Barton’s underground. The role involves face mapping and sampling, backs mapping, daily and weekly reports, independently directing ore drives, ROM management, updating the site structural wireframes on Surpac, signing off mining work plans, sludge drilling design. During my time in the role I was the sole geologist onsite for half of my swing leaving me responsible for all underground geology. I have furthered my communication skills by liaising with technical services and all underground personnel daily.

I held this position during their intense resource definition and early exploration programs for gold in the Pilbara region. Main responsibilities include remote field mapping, management of diamond and RC rigs, diamond core logging, logging and sampling of RC chips (single-handedly)- often working days where 400m or more were drilled, maintaining high quality sampling practices and QAQC, designing my own drill program from promising field mapping results.

I worked for this gold mining company operating in Western Australia’s world class Kalgoorlie Gold Region during their exploration/ resource drilling program. My main responsibilities were working with the RC rigs, logging and sampling.

This position was based in the Tanami Desert 750km North of Alice Springs during and exploration programme targeting gold prospects from an airborne magnetic survey and historic drilling data. The job Involved assisting the geologist by logging and sampling on air core and RC rigs, collecting old drill spoils using GPS, XRF of samples, vehicle and camp maintenance and cooking. Because it was such a remote location this meant I would work for long periods of time usually within a very small team improving my communication, teamwork and organisational skills.

For the last three summers I have worked at the Heights Of Abraham. The job involves guiding large groups of the public around an abandoned lead mine, informing them of the history and geology of the mines. Also it involves training other guides on the basic geology of the Carboniferous limestone and mineralisation of lead in the Derbyshire area. Communication, coupled with leadership skills were gained through educating the tourists about required information on the cavern as well as responsibly leading them through the caverns safely. Throughout my time at the Heights of Abraham, I am consistently praised for my friendly and welcoming approach when dealing with the customers; this positive feedback was reflected on a number of occasions on online review sites. Furthermore this experience allowed me to put much of the knowledge I have gained throughout my university career, into practice, and gave me a deeper insight into the world of geology.
