Seasoned and successful professional with much experience in refocusing medical and social work related businesses and organisations, leading to significantly improved outcomes (and financial success)..Particular interest and success in getting the best out of smaller teams and preparing them for successful expansion and change.Much expertise in reconciling the need to be financially responsible with desire to produce better, focused, outcome-driven health and social care services - success through innovation rather than simply cutting out expensive services.Skilful motivator, turning highly emotive situations into more measured, pragmatic approaches to problem-solving - leading on to greater job satisfaction for team members and a desire from staff members ultimately to strive for continual improvement.Strategic thinker, excellent communicator and tactician turning apparently unfavourable circumstances into opportunities for success.Special ability in written communication - taking an idea and translating it into a successful bid for funding. Movement Disorders Lead at South Tyneside Hospital; establishing a patient focussed and driven PD service with our new PDNS - weekly specialist clinics and regular MDT... Plus general medical, care of the elderly, polypharmacy, complex referrals and specialist end of life care. I believe that everyone deserves specialist end of life care. As well as Movement Disorders, Geriatrics and Pharmacology, I have a particular interest in end of life care and care for those who have irreversible frailty or who are proving more tricky to discharge from hospital. However, COVID-19 has resulted in diversifying my medicine, reintroducing GIM and acute care to my armoury. Over the course of the pandemic I’ve taken part in consultant medical on-call and respiratory assessment on-call, together with helping to lead and run a dedicated COVID-19 ward. I also help to mentor consultants and senior doctors new to our Trust, teach medical students and junior doctors, am part of the Heart Failure MDT, am an Educational Supervisor and am about to embark on being an appraiser. We live on the northeast coast, have 3 children, the eldest of whom has just embarked on the study of medicine and surgery in Sheffield, a cat, a dog and a PS5 - it’s a wonder that there’s any time for work...!

Associate Specialist (Trust - Working At Consultant Level & Responsibility)South Tyneside Nhs Foundation Trust Oct 2015 - PresentSouth Tyneside HospitalBack in the land of clinical medicine. Still T(GP) on GMC register but venturing back to the land of more hospital-based care.I think that hospitals need generalists again...Currently working in the country's friendliest NHS acute care institution as part of a joined-up team-based approach to the care of the elderly.C19 update - I’m working as a member of the senior team providing specialist acute geriatric care to the population of South Tyneside. One of a department of 7 geriatricians (including me!) at ST and a much larger cohort of friendly folk including our magnificent consultant colleagues at Sunderland, I care for patients on Ward 2 at ST hospital. I run the Movement Disorders service at ST, recently described as ‘exemplary’ by Parkinson’s UK (please someone else Tweet this and I can stop blowing my own trumpet!) And I’ll shortly be involved in the magnificent Frailty service - by attempting to provide instant acute geriatric care where it’s needed each and every Friday...See below for my life prior to C19 -‘Something unstoppable is set in to motion. Nothing is different but everything is changed.’Wish I’d written that - but alas no, thanks Paul. Half of my ward is focussed on providing holistic, personal end of life care and the other half looks to find long-term care solutions for those who need a joined-up approach to chronic disease management and general frailty issues. I’m so pleased now also to be delivering specialist care for patients who have Parkinson’s Disease (& related conditions) across South Tyneside. We’ve recently been successful in achieving the employment of a PD Nurse Specialist and our service is going from strength to strength with an enthusiastic and dedicated MDT. Over the next few years I hope that we will integrate further with our colleagues in Sunderland and then, together, to be able to offer our patients the very best in patient care, linking in with world-leading research based in Newcastle. -

Specialist Bid-Writer, Tactics & Strategy, Health Writer/Development WorkLearning Disabilities Federation Aug 2010 - Jun 2012North TynesideHired to write and edit a new publication - 'Cancer What's going to happen to me?' - in partnership with the PCT, DGH & MacMillan Cancer Support. This was completely overhauled and rewritten under my stewardship and gained inclusion on two national guidelines documents as a beacon of best practice in LD.Worked with groups to provide an LD-response from a group of young people about the Health White Paper + wrote a response also from the charity - widely circulated and gained inclusion on BBC Radio FiveLive's callback list for when LD topics have been discussedStarted to write all the bids for funding for the Charity. Every bid I have written has been successful over the last 3 years or so. As a result of my bids, LDF secured major funding from BBC Children In Need, The Big Lottery - twice, North Tyneside Council and North Tyneside PCT. This has safeguarded the charity's existence for the next 5 years - at a time when it thought that it would have to close. Advised on external communication, employment of new IT and strategic priorities
