The main focus of my research was looking at the role of freshwater biodiversity in providing food security, particularly to the rural poor. Inland freshwater fisheries provide over 33% of the world’s small scale fish catch and employ over 60 million people. Wild foods such as freshwater biological resources can act as a safety net for the poor by acting as an alternative source of food when harvests fail through ecological or socio-economic crises such as droughts or wars. However inland waters are the most threatened ecosystem in the world, which in turn threatens the livelihoods and sustenance of millions globally. The aim of this project was to build a spatial understanding of the importance of freshwater species to food security among other ecosystem services. The value of freshwater biodiversity may be largely underestimated, yet has a crucial role in ecosystem goods delivery (food). I also considered the trade-offs and synergies of human priorities and conservation of the species in question.
