Advocate, peace-builder, and committed to making the world a better place. My name is Alex Alvarez and I am a Masters student at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and a recent graduate in Political Science and International Studies, focusing on Peace, Security and Human Rights from the University of Arkansas. At Columbia I am a candidate for the Master's in International Affairs with a concentration in Human Rights and Humanitarian Policy with a focus on Gender and Public Policy. As a SIPA student I hope to further my skills with hopes to work in academia and the NGO sector in peacebuilding, advocacy, and social justice efforts. My research interests currently focus on LGBTQ+ and gender focused peacebuilding, human rights, and justice methods and a focus on the intersection of LGBTQ+ and Latine/x identity from a domestic and international lens. In both my studies and extracurriculars I am devoted to helping people excel and focus on gender and people. At SIPA I am serving as president of SPECTRUM LGBTQ+ and Allies at SIPA and as the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Human Rights Working Group to promote inclusion personally and professionally. I also have previous DEI work and leadership during my time at University of Arkansas including my appointment to the executive team through the Associated Student Government, sitting on DEI committees, research, reading, and skilled writing efforts academically and within the NGO sector, and further aiding students and staff as a Senior Resident Assistant.
