I manage research programs in the application of advanced high strength steels, including emerging third generation steels, for automotive applications. The research programs are focused on material characterization, constitutive, forming and fracture modeling, tooling optimization, additive manufacturing, and weld characterization and modeling.

I started my own company providing technical project management services for automotive and defense projects. I contracted with United States Automotive Materials Partnership and Auto/Steel Partnership on Department of Energy and direct funded projects (steel industry, automotive industry). The projects I managed covered a range of materials, including aluminum, titanium, magnesium and steel, covered a range of processes, including powder metal, castings, forgings, machining, heat treatment, coatings, and sheet forming, and covered a range of technical readiness from concept to demonstrated feasibility. Most of these projects included tasks in material testing and characterization, modeling (material, forming, fracture, etc.) and performance validation. I was mostly responsible for project execution but in a many cases, I assisted or was responsible for scoping projects. During project execution, I was responsible for financial management, project timing, resource management, and reporting.

While running my own company, I also worked for Technikon LLC providing technical program management services for Department of Defense funded projects. Projects included powder forged titanium brake rotors, investment cast titanium (howitzer guides), emerging processes in casting aluminum (mobile launchers) and rapid prototype cast steel (howitzer base plates). In addition to typical technical management roles, my responsibilities included on-site support at defense facilities and suppliers, communications with congressional staff, and providing technical support during conferences and exhibits.

Provided material, coating and process recommendations for TOMCAR (www.tomcar.com) on fasteners, shafts, weldments and body panels.

As an extension of my work at Chrysler, I was a Board of Director on the Automotive Metals Division (AMD) of the United States Automotive Materials Partnership (USAMP) from August 2004 - November 2008. I chaired the Board in 2005 and in 2008. I was responsible for developing advanced research projects in light weight metals and enabling technologies. AMD had an annual budget of over $2.5M and up to fourteen active research programs. I was recognized in 2006 for my contributions with a USCAR Special Recognition Award.

Managed the Chassis and Powertrain Cast Metals, Forgings and Heat Treat Materials Engineering Group, which included the Cast Metals Prototyping Laboratory, the Heat Treat Laboaratory and the Castings, Forgings and Heat Treat Engineering. The Castings lab cast prototype parts and samples/coupons for materials development. The Heat Treat Lab provided heat treat services for materials and process development and for the heat treatment of automotive parts, fixtures and test coupons. The Castings, Forgings and Heat Treat Engineering group is responsible for material and process selection, material and process validation, supplier evaluation and approval, and the evaluation of failed test and field components.

Supervised the Platform Materials Engineering Group (7 employees). Responsibilities included material and process recommedations to Product Engineering, material and process evaluation and development with Supplier Quality, and the evaluation of test and field component failures.

Resident materials engineer with Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, Transmission Engineering and Engine Engineering. Provided material and process recommendations for powertrain components, assisted in the development of new programs (WA580 Transmission, 5.7L Hemi, 62TE, etc.), approved print changes, and evaluated test and field failures.Wrote and published PS-10487, Chrysler Process Standard on vacuum carburizing.

Materials engineer responsible for non-ferrous wrought components (extrusions and forgings) and fastener materials. Managed three Chrysler Challenge Funds researching the susceptibility of high strength fasteners to hydrogen assisted cracking. Responsible for materials engineering material, process and performance standards within scope of responsibility.Wrote and presented two papers on hydrogen assisted cracking of fasteners. Obtained a patent on hydrogen induced cracking resistent fasteners. Procured rising step load testing equipment for the evaluation of hydrogen assisted crakcing of fasteners which led to the elimination of susceptible fasteners from structural applications.
