About Emily Barragan

Welcome to my profile! As a steward of our planet, I work to ensure that future generations of all living creatures have a healthy world to dwell on, and I aim to be among the young adults who handle this responsibility appropriately. This deep-seated stewardship is the driving force behind my pursuit of a chemical engineering degree. I apply the technical and interpersonal skills that I gain through my educational and professional journey to improve upon and cultivate practical renewable energy acquisition and storage systems. My current work as a battery scientist contributes to the global goal of improving energy storage efficacy of commercialized clean energy technologies. Fundamental studies on ubiquitous storage devices such as lithium-ion batteries must be carried-out to bolster their application in these life-saving processes.

Characterizing High-Capacity Ni-Rich Cathodes In Li-Ion Batteries - Graduate Researcher
Columbia Engineering Nov 2021 - Present
    Manhattan, New York, United States
I conduct research under Dr. Lauren Marbella to characterize and optimize the performance of next generation, high-capacity battery cathodes such as NMC811. These cathodes contain low amounts of the critical mineral, cobalt to minimize geopolitical concerns related to its acquisition. I leverage galvanostatic cycling of Li-ion batteries in coordination with NMR, XPS, and EIS analyses to establish electrolyte decomposition pathways within our batteries. My investigations clarify how and why different electrolyte additives influence cathode performance. Accordingly, these insights will inform the cogent development of electrolytes that enable the use of affordable, practical batteries cohesive with a renewable energy grid.

    Unite 2030 Aug 2022 - Sep 2022
    New York, United States
I was among 200 people selected from around the globe to ideate and develop solutions towards the United Nation’s sustainability development goals (SDGs). I participated in a leadership development series leading up to the main program. This experience is a component of UNITE 2030's inaugural Camp 2030 innovation and leadership hackathon. My hackathon team comprised of 5 individuals hailing from different knowledge backgrounds from across the world. We pitched solutions to UN and NGO personnel during Global Goals Week in New York City who held the choice of investing in certain solutions.
  • American Chemical Society
Cabin Leader For Acs Project Seed
American Chemical Society Jun 2021 - Jul 2021
I collaborated with American Society professionals in the chemical field to mentor high school students interested in pursuing a chemistry-related field in higher education. I facilitated tri-weekly meetings over the summer to refine their professional and academic skills while helping them hone their interests. At the end of the program I guided them as they prepared to present on a STEM topic of their choice in order to apply the science communication skills we workshopped throughout the summer.
  • Engineers For A Sustainable World At Uc Irvine

Engineers For A Sustainable World At Uc Irvine Sep 2018 - May 2021
ESW is a community-based club that inspires its network of environmentally-passionate members to develop sustainability projects that will be implemented in our community. As a a board member of ESW at UC Irvine since 2018, some of my main responsibilities included planning general meetings, developing member retention strategies and collaborating with external organizations/professionals.
  • Uc Santa Barbara
Partial Methane Combustion For Clean Fossil Fuel Utilization - Undergraduate Researcher
Uc Santa Barbara Jun 2020 - Oct 2020
As a means of virtually continuing research amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic, learned how to use COMSOL to simulate the multiphase flow of gaseous methane in a turbulent molten salt bubble reactor for Dr. Eric McFarland's research lab. My simulation provides a more detailed analysis of the team's partial methane combustion process and it allows us to adjust system parameters remotely as if we were in lab.
  • Uc Irvine
Passive Solar-Driven Water Desalination Device - Undergraduate Researcher
    Uc Irvine Jan 2019 - Apr 2020
    Irvine, California
I was a crucial developer in a patented heat recycling scheme that I helped apply to a portable, solar-driven, water desalination device. I conducted comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses while utilizing thermodynamic and mass transfer relationships to test my research team's potential designs for our water distribution device that could provide water in a low-energy intensive way to communities near bodies of water.
  • Uc Irvine Department Of Earth System Science

    Uc Irvine Dec 2017 - May 2018
Irvine, California And San Jose, Costa Rica
UCI students were chosen to conduct sustainable research, learn about biodiversity, and immerse ourselves in the Costa Rican culture. We spent a quarter learning about why Costa Rica is known as the green capital of the world, and we chose what we wanted to research in-country. I used qualitative methods to study how various agriculture techniques affect soil health, subsequently affecting its ability to sequester atmospheric carbon. After spending nine days in Costa Rica, I presented my research at the 2018 Costa Rica Research Symposium.
