About Emily Garrity
With nearly 10 years of experience in advanced materials and computations, my mission is to use my research and analysis skills to support the renewable energy transition. As an associate at Clark Street Associates, I consult for semiconductor and clean-tech clients to help them strategize and secure government funding for continued R&D and US manufacturing efforts. During my PhD at the Colorado School of Mines, my research included identifying new semiconductors for power electronics through computational physics During my PhD I honed my skills in density functional theory, materials science, and data analysis and visualization. My work successfully inspired collaborators at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to investigate new ultrawide band gap materials to bolster energy efficiency and power grid decarbonization. This work is complemented by my previous 5 years as a materials engineer in Boeing's Next Generation Composites research group. There I performed multi-scale modeling of polymer composites and managed a substantial project aimed at refining dimensions of wing prototypes. These experiences have sharpened my skills in molecular dynamics, finite element analysis, cross-functional team leadership, and high-exposure presentations.Specialties: communications, project management, materials science, semiconductors, renewable energy applications, modeling & data science

Thesis: “Discovering Semiconductors for Power Electronics through First-Principles Computation”- Proposed three top semiconductors from 1300 for use in energy-efficient high-power electronics, using physics-based atomistic modeling to predict enhanced electrical and thermal conductivity.- Developed post-processing scripts using Python programming, PANDAS, Excel, and matplotlib to effectively synthesize, analyze, and visualize thousands of data to support materials exploration efforts.- Investigated the behavior of point defects for electric conduction of six materials with density functional theory.- Communicated insights on the potential of emerging semiconductor devices to support power grid decarbonization, electrification, and energy efficiency goals through technical publications and informal presentations.- Quantified the impact of future power electronics demand on critical materials supply sustainability, including a sensitivity analysis related to manufacturing process and market forecasting.- Collaborated with National Renewable Energy Lab experimentalists to validate calculation predictions with crystal growth of proposed semiconductors.Additional Projects:- Performed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of environmental, sustainability, and energy impacts for perovskite solar cells, showing the impacts of synthesis pathway on manufacturing scale-up.- Proposed new stable contact materials for CdTe solar cells in FIRST Solar industry partnership project.- Employed machine learning random forest techniques within Python SciKitLearn to quickly predict switching efficiency of power electronics within one order of magnitude in a class project.- Analyzed clean energy solutions for eco-hotel by optimizing economics and resilience using NREL software in a class project.
Materials And Process Engineer
- Led a $750K project with an 8-person team across geographies, using my project management skills to establish performance metrics, conduct finite element modeling, and coordinate task management of validation measurements, successfully improving composite airplane wing dimensions in manufacturing demonstration.- Executed molecular dynamics materials modeling to develop polymer processes and analyze prediction uncertainty of glass transition temperature.- Developed pipeline to connect atomistic, mesoscale and continuum models of polymer elastic properties.- Conducted material characterization of carbon fiber and polymer composites using thermal and mechanical testing.- Increased stakeholder engagement and understanding with clear communication of complex technical information in executive-level presentations.
Rotation Program Engineer
Member of Boeing's Engineering Foundation Program (ECFP); a highly-selective, self-governed, rotational program with 5 rotations through the Boeing business units (commercial, defense, and technology) and product lifecycle. - Developed composite materials for additive manufacturing in research project.- Performed risk management evaluation as F-15 systems engineer.- Investigated UV-curable polymer recipes for sealant applications in chemical synthesis lab.- Supported composite manufacturing through automated blade cleaning project.- Prescribed corrective actions to 787 manufacturing errors for compliance to industry standards as liaison engineer.
Teaching Assistant
Taught 30 students in recitation for introductory solid state chemistry course. Helped to create an interactive learning environment with review sheets and in-class problem-solving sessions.
Materials & Process Engineering Intern
- Evaluated composite and adhesive material quality with mechanical testing.- Developed composite cure process improvements which streamlined lab work flow.
Research Intern
- Gathered data on end-user computing technology to consult Fortune 500 CTOs on IT strategy.
Intern
- Investigated the application of precious metal powder metallurgy in jewelry manufacturing. - Designed tests of press and sinter parameters using microscopy, SEM imaging, and structural testing
