As a part of HCA Healthcare's Capital Surgical Associates, I provided nutrition counseling and education to patients seeking bariatric surgery and anti-obesity medications. This included working with patients to help them meet their nutritional needs, manage gastrointestinal side effects, manage weight-related comorbid conditions, and make lifestyle changes in order to have life-long weight loss success.In addition, I established a nutrition program and handbook for bariatric surgery patients, and I developed an anti-obesity medication program in conjunction with the medical team.

As a part of UVA Health Surgical Care, I primarily worked with bariatric surgery patients. This involved nutrition counseling and education, managing postoperative gastrointestinal side effects, reviewing vitamin and mineral bloodwork, and providing recommendations on vitamin and mineral supplementation. I also conducted body composition and muscle strength assessments utilizing a SECA BIA scale and hand grip dynamometer as part of a quality improvement initiative to minimize muscle loss postoperatively.As one of the few dietitians in the area, I provided medical nutrition therapy and education to patients referred for a variety of conditions by UVA Health primary care physicians. This included diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, underweight status, and non-surgical weight management.Additional responsibilities included maintaining organizational relationships with community partners and bariatric supplement brands, leading bi-weekly group nutrition education classes and support group meetings, and quality improvement project management. I developed, managed, and analyzed the bariatric surgery department’s annual quality improvement projects for 2022 and 2023 according to MBSAQIP guidelines. I presented the results of these projects in quarterly bariatric stakeholder meetings.

As part of the Clinical Nutrition rotation of my Master program:- I completed a staff relief period of 2 weeks, in which I took on the majority of my preceptor RD's caseload (8-10 patients per day). - I developed nutrition assessments for a variety of hospitalized patients.- I diagnosed malnutrition according to the AND / ASPEN criteria.- I calculated patient energy and protein needs.- I performed enteral nutrition and total parenteral nutrition calculations.- I placed dietary orders for oral nutrition supplements and diet restrictions.- I conducted a quality improvement project for improving malnutrition documentation.- I presented and wrote a patient case study according to the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' guidelines.

For the Dietetics and Professional Management rotation of my Master program:- I created a comprehensive plan for the successful implementation of 31.70 additional registered dietitian full-time equivalents within all 24 Carilion Outpatient Clinics across southwest Virginia in order to increase Medicare reimbursement revenue.- I conducted a financial feasibility analysis and created a marketing plan as part of the comprehensive plan.

As part of my coursework (HNFE 5344), I met with 2-3 clients each week for nutrition counseling, which focuses on behavior change. Through this educational opportunity, I have gained experience administering motivational interviewing and providing client-centered care through tailoring educational materials and nutrition education towards the goals of each client.
