About Emily Parrish
Emily is an experienced national security analyst currently working in the data-driven decision making space within Nuclear Strategy and Policy. She has expansive subject matter expertise in the Air Force and Navy nuclear enterprises and has conducted analysis leveraging DoD-based data environments. During her nine year career at the Institute for Defense Analyses, she has participated in and managed projects ranging in topic areas, including but not limited to: program evaluation, developmental testing of systems, code validation, data and process mapping, topic modelling, and network analysis. Her graduate work (Master's of Science in Data Analytics), completed at the George Washington University's School of Engineering and Applied Science, focused on natural language processing and social media. In line with those interests, she is increasingly fascinated by the expansion of generative AI (specifically LLMs) and how those models could benefit the government, specifically in the Air Force asset monitoring and reporting space.

● Developed an internal interface and software package to help researchers without HTML experience to generate web pages with content for a web-based product. Added features like interactive menus, to create dynamic plots, maps, and database references all within the interface.● Led sub-task coordinating the data collection/digitization/analysis teams (1-2 people) related to nuclear ionospheric disturbances and airblast effects. ● Designed an inventory system that allowed authors and reviewers of products and data to make tracked changes to the metadata/data imported from other sources. Worked with other members of the project team to add additional location information to the data like slant ranges, line of sight, etc. ● Used Python expertise to create a data processing and topic modelling pipeline for social media data analysis. Worked with another researcher to expand the data set and package the analysis code. Delivered a curated directory of Chinese and Russian adversarial tweets and a Python library for data preparation and processing. ● Developed a Python library to query SCOPUS and perform network analysis between researchers which has subsequently been used for other analysis efforts.● Supported developmental testing of countermine detections systems by developing on-site analyses using MATLAB based tools. Wrote software scripts to pull and convert data from the systems being tested and supported post-processing and analysis back at IDA before briefing the final results.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
Carried on individual research project initiated by former lab member and completed instrumental and computational analysis of bacteria samples. Troubleshot instrumentation issues and edited experimental conditions for better chromatogram resolution.Proposed and presented findings at a university-wide poster session for undergraduate research funded by scholarship.Used HPLC-MS (ion trap mass spectrometry) to identify proteins from wild type and mutant strains of Heliobactor pylori.Aided in the completion of a flowing afterglow mass spectrometer including installing a pump, updating plumbing, and editing software.Worked on computational theoretical calculations using Gaussian09 for both collaborators and other projects in the laboratory.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Participated in research via the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.Used knowledge of organic synthesis to polymerize monomers used directly for testing and data analysis.Worked underneath/collaborated with a graduate student for their research project.Created poster for formal poster presentation halfway through the program.Delivered final presentation of research to peers and department faculty.
