PhD Thesis: Characterisation of the second binding protein of immunoglobulin (Sbi) in Staphylococcus aureus. The second immunoglobulin binding protein of S. aureus (Sbi) has two N-terminal domains that bind the Fc region of IgG in a similar fashion to protein A and two domains that can bind to the complement protein C3 and promote its futile consumption. It was proposed that Sbi helps bacteria avoid innate immune defences of the host.Research milestones: • Defined the cellular localisation of Sbi in S. aureus. • Identified the novel mechanism of attachment of Sbi to the S. aureus cytoplasmic membrane.• Identified Sbi as a novel immune evasion factor for S.aureus.
