At the end of my first year at Medidata, I was promoted to Director. In my second year, I focused more on advocating for quality across the organization. I learned tough lessons about attempting to influence across functions, breaking through silos, and changing engineering culture. I had some successes with Agile practices, data provisioning, cloud deployments, CI, DevOps, Observability - and some missed opportunities. I guided rollout of new testing practices, developed better coordination on integration testing and formal verification, and grew my team to about 45 managers and testers.

I was brought on to help stabilize a remote office and assist with a Product Quality transformation effort in a heavily regulated software context. I grew my team from 1 manager and 4 testers to 2 managers and 13 testers. I rewrote SOPs to incorporate Exploratory testing and context-driven testing philosophies. I drove numerous process improvements inside of the Product Quality organization, and advocated fiercely for my team and quality engineering standards. I focused on introducing new testing methodologies, optimizing our testing approach, and evangelizing modern testing principles. I owned the product roadmap, worked with customers to learn more about their requirements/desirements, and prioritized enhancements and issues. I demonstrated and prepared proof of concept projects for sales prospects for our performance testing, mobile functional testing, and real user measurement tools. I mentored and educated salespeople, ran discovery processes for implementations, and scoped professional services.

I managed our application performance testing practice: marketing, pre-sales, pricing and quoting, writing SOWs, contractor management, and delivery. My team included full-time and contracted employees. We reduced risk for our clients by producing actionable and credible information about the performance and scalability of their systems. We produced this information by conducting experiments, examining results, and contextualizing findings of the experiments for project stakeholders with various backgrounds. Some of the data we analyzed included resource analysis compared against server response times in the context of workload models I designed to challenge the capacity, scalability, and reliability of systems. Tools we used included LoadRunner, NeoLoad, and BlazeMeter. Applications we tested included a PaaS cloud portal, Oracle E-Business R12 upgrades, a 50k+ user mobile game, a SaaS agile management application, and various e-commerce sites. I also trained on APM tools such as Dynatrace/Ruxit and Riverbed’s SteelCentral (formerly OpNet).

I managed the performance testing group, reporting to the CTO. Our primary responsibility was performance and reliability testing of Hyland’s broad suite of software (content management, document capture and recognition, and workflow). This included SQL Server and Oracle databases, high-volume content ingestion, and web server platforms. My team identified scalability characteristics and limits for architects and developers. We solved issues and assessed capacity, evaluating deployment, processes, and capacity for a SaaS multi-tenant system. Outside of leading my team, I led technical pre-sales discussions, delivering chalk talks on application architecture and scaling philosophy. I delivered scalability, capacity, and performance testing engagements for customers and partners. I wrote white papers, delivered webinars, and presented at user/partner conferences on scalability and sizing, platforms, storage, HA/DR, scalability, hardware sizing, and WAN deployments. I published metrics and tuning recommendations for web services, SQL Server, ingestion processors, and image recognition products. I evaluated storage, virtualization, and thin client platforms. I wrote support policies, created solutions, and defined integration/implementation practices for specific technologies. I worked on studies of information capture/ management practices, developing and describing solutions with ROI calculations. Before that, I worked in leadership for Quality Assurance. I led and trained a constantly changing team, hiring many testers for my team and others. I am very proud of how many people grew from my team into leadership and management roles in QA and elsewhere in the company. I introduced virtualization and wrote our first virtualization support statement. I was our technical escalation path for deployment, performance, database, virtualization, and WAN deployment issues.
