Serving as a barista challenged me in a multitude of unexpected capacities. The fast-paced environment combined with the required multitasking makes for some laborious days. Each day that I entered the doors at Starbucks, I was excited to connect with the customers over our mutual enjoyment, a good cup of coffee. Thus, I take pride in each beverage that I crafted because a latte is not the same as a cappuccino; It is the slight variations in each person's order that makes the role of the barista so unique. Being a barista requires constant, clear communication and seamless teamwork. Although we each function as individuals, completing our own tasks, each person plays a vital role in the overall functionality of the store. Being a barista also allowed me to connect personally with the customers. Even though the connections were often less than one minute, my goal was to make that minute, one of the best parts of each person's day.

Working as a mathematics tutor required me to work in tandem with professors to facilitate collaborative academic instruction with students. Working with ~20 students per day, I was challenged to adapt to the needs of each students at fluctuating levels of comprehension. By maintaining a growth mindset, I became adept at creating new approaches to solving difficult problems with the student. Working through problems and ensuring understanding empowered students to successfully complete current and future assignments.

My undergraduate research experience served as an introduction to the study of disease prevalence and potential treatment methods. The research laboratory focused on the isolation and characterization of bacteriophages lytic to Staphylococcus aureus at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) in Conway, South Carolina, as a means to identify bacteriophages that can potentially be used to treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). As MRSA and its cutaneous infections in otherwise healthy individuals has surfaced in non-clinical settings, our team analyzed samples collected from students to investigate coliphage and S. aureus phage population dynamics. The investigative process included conducting microbial tests in order to detect lytic activity, and molecular techniques to confirm the presence of specific bacteriophages. As antibiotic resistance continues to be a threat to global human health, our research encouraged harvesting and exploring the utility of bacteriophages as it may prove to be immensely useful to humanity as a whole in its fight against antibiotic resistant infections.

Assisting physicians as a remote medical scribe permitted experiencing the application of cutting-edge technology in a clinical setting. Analyzing audio and video transmissions allowed for an in-depth view of human health, including the diagnostic and treatment processes. Specializing in neurosurgery and orthopedics, I became well-versed with the medical workflow, terminology, and imaging technologies regularly utilized within the practice.
