  • The New York Times
    Social Media Marketing Consultant
The New York Times Dec 2009 - May 2010
    New York, Ny, Us
The New York Times is the newspaper of record and has been awarded 114 Pulitzer Prizes and citations — more than any other news organization.I am very lucky to have started my career at The New York Times right out of New York University. After finishing up a one-year internship at The New York Times as a senior in college, I was the first intern to join as a social media consultant, where I oversaw its social media strategy and evangelized social media throughout the company. I am most proud of having trained award-winning journalists, such as Nicholas Kristof and Mark Bittman, on social media best practices. I also implemented a system for measuring the social media program's success, which is still in place today. My position entailed collaborating across departments with journalists, editors, developers, and publicists and overseeing a small team of devoted social media marketing interns, which enabled me to get my hands sticky in a number of honey pots while at The Times, the least of which was traveling to 2010 Vancouver Olympics to unlock the "NYTimes Olympian" Foursquare badge my team had developed.

    New York, Ny, Us
As a fledging NYU Stern understand student, I landed the most epic internship as a social media intern at The New York Times, launching my career in and passion for the media industry. As an intern, I wasn't just a coffee brewer. I was the voice of The Times, at the helm of its Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter pages (hundreds of social pages in total). I assisted marketing mastermind Soraya Darabi in implementing the company's social media strategy and had the honor of working hand-in-hand with teams from dream organizations Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Flickr to beta test and implement campaigns on behalf of The Times. While at the The Times, I was honored to work with the internal marketing team to support its creation of a number of key microsites and ad campaigns, the most dynamic and impressive of which was its 2009 INMA award-winning Facebook campaign covering the election and inauguration of 44th President Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/ObamaFb. Another intern and I worked directly with New York Times Facebook fans to authorize usage of their statements and to real-time monitor the hundreds of thousands of comments we received during the week of the campaign. It was, to say the least, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

I managed planning, creative, licensing, legal, and production and negotiated $70,000 of free media placement in the December/January 2008 CosmoGirl magazine, along with $10,000 in donated image licenses from Getty Images. On the day-to-day, though, my job was to compiled research on skincare trends, competitors, similar and alternative markets, advertising trends, and consumer behavior in the skincare market. As a bonus of being chosen from a pool of 3,000 applicants for this internship, I was honored to blog about my internship on CosmoGirl.com and met then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for a group discussion, photo shoot, and article for CosmoGirl magazine about young women leaders.

  • Mazzio'S
    Cashier
    Mazzio'S Nov 2001 - Aug 2005
    Us
The majority of my high school work experience was spent as a cashier at Mazzio's Pizza in Paragould, Arkansas. I worked my way up from a trainee to a trainer and banded with our crew's cooks, dishwashers, delivery drivers, and fellow cashiers to figure out how to make the pizza place environment incredibly fun and appetizing for customers. It's amazing what a little workplace camaraderie can do for the spirit. Thank you to my high school friend, Morganne Brown, for making this happen. It was my first meaningful experience in true leadership and business management, and it was also the driver for me being able to become a first generation college graduate. Without the funds saved from working at Mazzio's, I likely would not have been able to pay for the minimal student contribution necessary to attend NYU. Remember your roots and those who helped you along the way.
  • Mcdonald'S Corporation
    Cashier
    Mcdonald'S Corporation Jun 2001 - Nov 2001
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
I took my first official job at the age of 15, so that I could pay for gas to drive my brother and myself back and forth to school and have some extra spending money. I was a cashier and worked weekends and after school. I was particularly enthusiastic about drive-through duty and customers seemed to love my cheery attitude coming across on the speaker. In my small hometown, it was either retail or fast food if you were a high schooler looking for a job - I decided I'd rather spend my time trying to fulfill McDonald's "we love to see you smile" mission than fulfilling the needs of fashion-hungry shoppers. It turns out working at McDonald's isn't exactly like it comes across in commercials, but the food industry was a fun learning experience!
