Since small businesses don’t generally have the same resources enjoyed by larger competitors, those of us who work in them often have the chance to touch more than a single function. Consequently, I’ve had learning opportunities in marketing/sales, operations, accounting and information technology, all mission-critical areas that impact the top and bottom lines of every commercial enterprise. I’ve enjoyed immense variety in my work, remained relevant by acquiring new skills and played an integral role in the success of a business as it evolved and grew over 20+ years. Many of the technological advancements that enabled my employer’s business to grow and increase efficiency were due to my behind-the-scenes system upgrade efforts.Recent challenges due to the protracted COVID crisis have been consequential. By applying for forgivable and low-interest government loans, however, I helped my employer retain staff during a time when many other businesses were forced to close or retrench for lack of talent.Working cross-functionally has provided an in-depth understanding of how each area of the business integrates with the whole enterprise and adds value—key insights essential in managing a business well.
