About Erin Flannery
Hi! I'm Erin (she/her), a recent graduate of Colgate University, where I received a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in International Relations and Geography. I received Honors for my Geography Thesis, "Geographies of Inclusion," and graduated Summa Cum Laude. In March 2023, I received the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. I self-designed a one-year independent international project exploring the viability of social entrepreneurship as a livelihood solution for refugees and vulnerable host community populations. I worked in Kenya, India, Thailand, Türkiye and Jordan with local businesses that employ refugees in urban and camp settings. From June to December of 2021, I worked for Fulphil, an educational non-profit based in Philadelphia, which brings curriculums to underserved high schools. I co-authored a book entitled "Your Environmental Footprint," a curriculum for sustainability in the 21st century. In 2022, I interned for MADE51, a humanitarian start-up created by the UNHCR. MADE51's mission is to help artisan refugees in areas of concern gain market access by partnering with local social enterprises within these regions. At MADE51, I was responsible for revising the Pathway Process for social enterprises to partner with our organization and mapping artisan groups across the globe. This experience has widened my understanding of global markets and the economic livelihoods of refugees.I'm also interested in human-centered design and creative problem solving, which I practiced through my involvement with the Innovation Fellows, a group of students who serve an advisory role on several projects on the University Campus and the surrounding Village of Hamilton. I've also been involved with the Seeing Eye Guide Dog School for the Blind in Morristown, NJ. Since 2009, I have raised six puppies for the organization. During this time, I also performed a 3-year research project on canine genetic diseases in conjunction with the lead geneticist of the organization. These various interests have created a strong foundation in liberal arts that has informed my worldview and work experience.
