Ethan Martens work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Chassis Lead

- Led a team of ten other student engineers and oversaw the design, manufacturing, testing, and validation of suspension, steering, and braking systems.- Co-led full suspension kinematics redesign. New design optimized load paths, improved overall system integration, and reduced compliance. Loading optimization resulted in a 30% reduction in control arm mass.- Led vehicle dynamics modeling efforts. Created a two DOF quarter-car model to select an ideal damping range based on model inputs such as mass, spring rates, and various step inputs (force, velocity, displacement, etc). - Led full antiroll system redesign. Pivoted from a traditional lever arm style design to a torsion blade-style design. Created a model to predict vehicle handling under cornering due to antiroll changes. Emphasized correct component sizing to reduce overall system compliance and part failure.

Chassis Engineer

Madison, Wisconsin, United States

- Lead redesign of rear actuation kinematics, bellcrank, and bellcrank mounts. Met the team's goals of reducing manufacturing times and improving component and system reliability with minimal mass gain. Design choices led to an earlier rolling chassis and first drive for both combustion and electric cars by multiple weeks compared to previous years.- Design of rear actuation kinematics reduced moment build-up and compliance resulting in a more efficient suspension system. Bellcrank and bellcrank mounting design was simplified to improve manufacturability and lead times while reducing stress concentrations in key problem areas.- Performed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) along with hand calculations on suspension components to validate designs and ensure suitable safety factors.- Created machining toolpaths in MasterCAM and machined components utilizing both manual and CNC machines. Acquired 150+ hours of machining experience and guided young engineers with DFM feedback in design reviews.

Sep 2022 - Jul 2024

Mechanical Design Engineering Intern - Mobility Systems

Oshkosh, Wisconsin, United States

- Lead kick bar redesign concept development to accommodate addition of rear-mounted ZR-arm for McNeilus rear loader garbage trucks. Designed solutions utilizing the traditional hydraulic cylinder system and a four bar linkage. Designs met very tight packaging constraints and 8500 lb loadcase requirement.- Optimized design to reduce required hydraulic cylinder force and four bar linkage actuator torque. Notably, four bar linkage design reduced required initial torque from 82000 in-lbs to 1500 in-lbs.- Utilized CATIA DMU Kinematics to simulate designs and performed engineering analysis on kick bar components to ensure actuator and other components would meet stringent loadcase requirements.

May 2024 - Aug 2024

Mechanical Design Engineering Intern - Safety & Restraints

Fremont, California, United States

- Designed test fixtures and modified vehicle surface models in CATIA with a quick turnaround time to aid in the testing of all vehicle airbag systems. Test fixtures were representative of full-scale and small-scale vehicle environments. - Streamlined and automated airbag data analysis and report creation. Created Python scripts to automate test data analysis and generate PowerPoint reports based on the results. Scripts generated reports in under 30 seconds, previously a 30+ minute task.- Developed a MATLAB program to detect variance in steering wheel angles (<1.5 deg) when installed on a test fixture mimicking no steering angle to root cause misalignment issues.

Jan 2024 - May 2024

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Burnsville, Minnesota, United States

- Developed an MR-compatible laser-cut polymer tube that simplified shaft design and met flexibility and tip deflection requirements.- Created a Finite Element model for catheter tip shape prediction and shaft flexibility prediction. The models estimate tip deflection, force transfer, and flexibility of existing and new laser-cut polymer tubing catheter designs.

May 2023 - Aug 2023

Owner

Martens Lawn Service

Bloomington, Minnesota, United States

- Successfully pivoted business strategies during multi-year drought- Provided services ranging from weekly mowing and snow removal to fall cleanups and landscaping projects.- Planned and implemented lawn health initiatives such as weed control, fertilization, watering, and mowing schedules to provide a healthy lawn.

May 2018 - Sep 2022

Grounds

Edina, Minnesota, United States

- Performed daily maintenance tasks including mowing, tee service, bunker raking, divot filling, string trimming, special projects, and other general upkeep of the course and clubhouse grounds.- Worked individually and as part of a team.- Operated a wide range of turf maintenance machinery and tools such as specialty mowers (tee mowers, greens mowers, hover mowers, etc.), utility vehicles, bunkers rakes, and hand tools- Completed self-directed mowing and landscaping projects.
