I conducted research on a non-annotated endosymbiotic bacterium in the order Holosporaceae. I used bioinformatic pipelines and programs to annotate the genome of the endosymbiont. The project culminated with a phylogenetic analysis in context to related bacteria, and analyses of existent biochemical pathways. I have gained valuable experience in analyzing genetic data using bioinformatic software and pipelines, as well as learning skills in computer programming, including using the computer language R and common-line interface commands. I have been given the opportunity to work independently while creating the trajectory for the project. I contribute most of my learning to the process of failure and trouble-shooting as I have adapted to independently solve problems that inherently arise. I have also benefited greatly from a collaborative environment, with my PI, post-doc, and other graduate students. In addition to this project I have gained experience in molecular biology benchwork, including DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and PCR.

From Nov 2016-Sep 2018, I worked 50+ hours a week as a medical technician for an Urgent Care in Seattle, Washington. In this role I acted as a medical scribe and a medical assistant to ER trained physicians. I have gained the clinical experience of ascertaining the patient’s medical history, describing the current concerns in a clear and professional manner and I performed point of care tests like a rapid flu or an EKG. Most importantly, I have honed my patient-centered skills and actively focused on being empathetic and caring in all patient interactions.

Taught English to children aged 8-36 months, collected, analyzed and coded data. Collaborated with other members of the team to improve English curriculum and worked in a multi-lingual environment.

Created a safe, fun and open community, acted as live-in advisor and addressed any issues that arose in a calm manner. Created programs targeted to support residents in their interests and academics. Worked with international student organizations on campus to create cultural educational events.

Led groups of students around campus and helped them get integrated into life at the University of Washington and worked hard to make their transition as smooth as possible. Worked with team to deliver a fun and useful product to incoming students. Supported incoming students by encouraging them to access resources throughout their career at UW. Supported staff with additional tasks.

Led groups of campers aged 8-14 during week long sessions at camp for two summers. Supervised them 24 hours a day and kept them safe, engaged and continuously having fun. Collaborated with coworkers to organize activities for campers.

Worked with team of fellow interns to create events to raise awareness for student health on campus. Supported partner public health groups on campus.
