I am experienced in design, project management and leadership through a proven track record of achievement in academic and extra-curricular activities. Looking to stretch my creative limits and gain experience in developing products with Dyson that are both consequential and elegant, from first appraisal through to market.I have developed a real passion for meaningful innovation throughout my degree. Various design and manufacture assignments have allowed me to enhance my resourcefulness in locating, analysing and articulating large amounts of information, apply technical understanding of the physical realm and be creative on the tactile and sensory levels required for effective product design. Many of my university projects have been based on medical products - I have relished the opportunity to positively impact consumer health through working in this field. With a vast depth of existing research available, I have exercised critical judgement and learned to extract meaning from complex technical literature. This has culminated in my Master's dissertation, entitled 'Design and manufacture of a replacement elbow joint'.During my time at Glasgow I have immersed myself in university life. Among many other fantastic opportunities with various clubs and societies, I was honoured to be elected president of the a cappella society, Choral Stimulation. My interpersonal and organisational skills were invaluable assets for this role as I was responsible for arranging and running a large number of events throughout the UK. I also restructured the committee, rewrote the constitution and rebranded the group. Winning the Scottish regional championships was a key highlight. My experiences have cultivated a confidence in being accountable for groups and projects, working well as part of a cohesive team and exercising innovative and critical thinking in a range of environments – bolstering a resolve to excel in my role of Graduate Design Engineer at Dyson after graduation.

Events TeamC Venues Jul 2012 - Aug 2012Edinburgh, United KingdomFollowing prior experience in event management, I worked for a summer with the largest independent venue in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, C Venues. I was part of a small team who were responsible for organizing and running all unprogrammed events across the five venues and 20+ theatre spaces. I managed performers and audiences of 200+ people daily and regularly adapted spaces to suit changes in footfall and venue availability.Effective promotion is very important in event organization to ensure a large amount of attendance and custom, particularly when there is the vast amount of competition inherent with running a festival show or event. I was in charge of designing promotional materials, running online media platforms and creating/updating noticeboards throughout the venues for all events. I was accountable for loss of custom in between shows or programmed events, meaning I had to be imaginative in my problem solving and provide effective solutions to maximise bar-flow and ticket sales. This was particularly important when acts cancelled, venue spaces experienced technical problems or staff dropped out during the course of the festival run.Maintaining enthusiasm amongst staff and performers was essential to the smooth running of the Fringe. This required real resilience, perseverance and positivity as high levels of stress and minimal sleep eroded morale over the six-week run. It was imperative that I was able to think on my feet at any given moment to deal with developing situations and conduct myself professionally and confidently throughout. -
Mechanical Design EngineerSeatec Uk Ltd Jun 2011 - Aug 2011Glasgow, United KingdomDuring my time at SeaTec, I developed a number of technical engineering skills whist working on a number of live projects, primarily the bid for a new-build hybrid passenger ferry for Caledonian MacBrayne. My key duties involved:- production of P&ID’s for key ship systems in accordance with classification society / M.C.A. rules.- estimating mechanical engineering and system piping components during the tendering process for new builds, including the numbers off, types and capacities of the ships’ pumps.- pressure drop and flow rate calculations for piping and pump sizing. Design process for sizing, stiffening and general instrumentation of tanks required in main systems.- drafting of piping into machinery spaces and skids. Orthographic and Systematic drawings using AutoCAD.- contacting suppliers for quotes and information of products and services.- review and summarisation of past and current projects for ship management processes.- marine safety training (Marlins Marine Safety Training certificate). My technical comprehension of new engineering practices was regularly put to the test whilst working with international component suppliers, draftsmen and senior design engineers. Working in this environment helped me to understand and respect some of the core values, principles, methods and limitations of the discipline of mechanical design engineering. After working on the passenger ferry for three months, I was very glad to hear a few weeks after leaving that SeaTec had won the design bid for the build, meaning that many of the drawings I had produced helped secure the intended work.
