Working across a multidisciplinary team spread across multiple institutions, my role is to manage a project which aims to develop public-facing demonstrator off-grid rapid electric vehicle chargers. I am also involved in researching hybrid battery technologies (e.g. combining lithium-ion and lead acid) as an off-vehicle energy store which acts as an intermediate between renewable energy sources and the electric vehicle chargers.

Working as part of the RELCo-Bat project with the Faraday Institution, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Southampton, the University of Sheffield and the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST). I will be working to build a low-cost soluble lead flow battery with electrolyte recovered from spent lead acid batteries to support off-grid generation in Botwana and Sierra Leone.

Working with Highways England, I was part of a team who completed a technology review and feasibility study for the energy harvesting from motorways. This was with a view to powering the sensors and displays required for smart motorways.

By 2040 reports from industry suggest up to 10 percent of all electricity consumed will be stored in long duration energy storage. We aim to develop and manufacture the soluble lead flow battery to help facilitate the transition to net zero by delivering a safe, recyclable and, critically, low-cost solution for the long-duration energy storage market.
