Extremum Seeking Control on Wind Energy• Researched Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control theory on wind energy.• Designed multivariable discrete-time Extremum Seeking control in wind turbine torque control and yaw alignment. Improved wind turbine power efficiency (~15%). • Measured and processed the real-time tower oscillation feedback signal data (acceleration) by using FFT and RMS approach. Reduced the tower mechanical load (~40%). • Evaluated and validated control strategies by using the lab-scale wind turbine system in wind tunnel experiment.2. Wind Farm Optimal Power Control Project• Investigated aerodynamic interactions (Wake Effect) between upstream and downstream turbines in the wind farm. • Designed the enhanced Extremum Seeking control to improve wind farm level optimal power capture (~10%).3. Lab-Scale Wind Turbine System:• Constructed and controlled the variable-speed lab-scale wind turbine system with real-time sensors, actuators, SCADA, real-time microprocessor, and MATLAB.• Design a transistor circuit to control the DC generator electrical torque in the real-time experiment. Connected control circuit with MATLAB by using Arduino PWM signal as a digital to analog (D/A) converter.• Analyzed the rotor airfoil aerodynamics. Fully Instrumented Wind Tunnel• Designed and set up a 6 meters long, low Reynolds number, fully instrumented wind tunnel system.• Controlled 3-phase AC motor speed by using variable frequency drive (VFD). Connected to MATLAB through a control circuit and Arduino microprocessor. 5. Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) System Project• Analyzed the airship flight aerodynamic. Research the 6-DOF modeling of the airship in MATLAB and Simulink. • Design the airship flight dynamic using multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) quantitative feedback theory.• Simulated the airship longitudinal and lateral motion control in Simulink S-function.

• Designed an advanced control strategy to stabilize the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) sub-reflector on the feed-arm. • Reduced the radio telescope pointing error (less than RMS 5 arc-second) by using sensor fusion method (optical telescope CCD camera, inclinometer, accelerometer and quadrant detector).• Controlled the Stewart platform to improve the GBT high frequency (above 100 GHz) observation pointing performance in windy conditions.
