About Martin Murphy

For most of the last 14 years I have held a variety of different roles with charities working to address some of the issues surrounding homelessness. I'm a trained Personal Coach and Civil and Commercial Mediator I have developed and managed a number of personal development and life skills programmes within the homelessness sector starting in 2002 with Training For Life. I am currently a Project Manager for Groundswell, managing the Homeless Health Peer Advocacy programme in the Tri-Borough in London.

Homeless Health Peer Advocacy offers one-to-one support for people experiencing homelessness to make and attend health appointments, overcoming the practical, personal and systemic barriers which prevent them from addressing their health needs. The program is delivered by Peer Advocates – volunteers who all have personal experience of homelessness.

    A varied role in a rapidly changing organisation and one that I enjoyed immensely. I joined HOSB, a charity based in a beautiful grade 1 listed building on the corner of Soho Square to assist in the design and development of their flagship life skills programme, This involved supporting the development of the business side of the work of the house, first in partnership with Beyond Boyle and latterly, Quintessentially.I designed and delivered life skills training, managed a team of volunteers, all of whom had experienced homelessness, liaised with a variety of different organisations to arrange events, set up events, cleaned the garden, washed the dishes. In fact, everything that needed to be done that was within my capacity and probably some that was not!

    Joint owner of Network2012 a social enterprise and business network. The idea was to develop a business network to support small business and social entrepreneurs while providing start up funds who people who had experienced homelessness to start their own business.Although this business folded in 20011 I learned a great deal in the process. I learned first hand the difficulties of starting and running a social enterprise and gained great insight into the world of social enterprise itself. This was also the time I developed my skills in the use of social media for business and social projects.
