Providence, Rhode Island Area

The Providence Healthy Communities Office (HCO) is the City’s lead agency for health policy, health promotion and substance abuse prevention. The HCO works to ensure that Providence residents have equitable access to the resources they need to lead healthy lives.As an consultant to the HCO, I managed project development related to school gardens, city-owned vacant land, and urban agriculture. I coordinated with staff from the HCO and other city departments and consistently gathered input and reported to a diverse range of external stakeholders. Specifically, I worked on the following activities: • Facilitated a new working group on the opportunities and barriers to a citywide school garden program• Published a users guide to zoning and food safety regulations pertaining to on-site urban farmstands, written for a low-literacy audience• Wrote a successful grant application to the Rhode Island Food Policy Council and coordinated the successful acquisition of a multiyear grant from the Rhode Island Department of Public Health• Created and issued an RFP for a new small grants program for small businesses that improve food access in coordination with Planning & Development

Providence, Rhode Island Area

Sidewalk Ends Farm a woman-owned farm started in 2011 on a 5000-square foot vacant lot in Providence’s Armory Park neighborhood and has since expanded to two acres in Seekonk, MA. SEF cultivates chemical-free vegetables and sells them at farmers markets, to restaurants, and to neighbors through a CSA. SEF is also an educational space and hosts preschools, high schools, universities, summer camps, and other farmers and local agricultural organizations, for workshops and field trips.As a farmer and marketing manager at Sidewalk Ends Farm, I engaged in the following activities:• Developed and implemented marketing plan including farmers markets, restaurants, and CSA sales • Served as liaison to producers cooperative and to multi sector food systems policy communities • Developed farm education opportunities and presentations for middle school to college-age students• Supervised interns and volunteers• Wrote a successful grant application to the Rhode Island Food Policy Council
