As a Senior Policy Manager I lead EPHA's work on non-communicable diseases and also coordinate their communications overall.

Senior Advocacy Adviser in EU Advocacy Office. Led advocacy around child and maternal health and nutrition. I also led the Brussels component of Save the Children's Global Campaigns - "Everyone" and "Every Last Child". This involved launching reports and papers promoting the EU dimension of the campaign and presenting the positions to EU Decision makers. Major policy focus for the work also included the EU’s multiannual Financial Framework and revision of the EU Consensus for Development. The work also involved liaising with many other civil society partners in particular: • Global Health coalition, especially civil societies contribution to the Global Health Policy Forum,• Brussex - the coalition of NGOs active on sexual reproductive health and rights, • Generation Nutrition Brussels, • Concord - especially it’s working group on the MFF.

Managing European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) contribution to Action for Global Health and aiding the EPHA team on a related range of global health issues. Role was to increase and facilitate the engagement of the EPHA membership with global health issues as well as bringing a public health perspective to Action for Global Health. Event organisation and communication activities were therefore as important as traditional advocacy towards EU institutions.Major milestones included:• Participating in the DG Dev Civil Society Contact group and co-chairing the Commission / Stakeholder Global Health Policy Forum at its inception,• contributing to NGO EU positions (both EPHA’s and Action for Global Health) e.g. responding to the consultation on the EU’s role in Global Health, and drafting / editing briefings and Reports, • Attending events e.g. the 1998 UN Financing for Development conference in Doha, the World Health Assembly, GAVI partners forum, the EDDs, and the Joint Parliamentary Assembly.• co-organising the Conference on the Right to Health and the Health Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the European Parliament, • organising and co-hosting a meeting with the World Bank as part of the series of meetings that initiated the new dialogue between the World Bank and civil society,• Participating in Concord groups– notably Aidwatch and the PCD taskforce,• Assisting strategic planning for EPHA in areas such as non-communicable diseases, trade and access to medicines, and the European Public Health and Agriculture Consortium,• Campaigning for innovative sources of development finance including the Robin Hood Tax.

European advocacy in support of vulnerable road users, including contributing to the WHO Europe edition of the World Health Report 2004, establishing and running the Commission funded network of vulnerable road user NGOs called “VOICE”, and contributing to EU framework research programmes

Included acting for three month period in 1997/8 as Director which entailed securing EC annual funding grant. Other functions were advocacy, campaigning and communications work (print, radio and TV media) on European policies on the environmental impact of transport. Issue areas included: Vehicle emissions, fuel quality and air quality Directives, transport pricing, infrastructure, bunker emissions, and the climate change impact of the transport sector. Major activities included: • aiding 2001 Belgian Presidency particularly on the revision of the Common Transport Policy,• contributing to WHO Europe work & publications on transport, climate change & health, • co-chairing NGO forum at UNECE / WHO 1999 conference on transport environment & health, • Northern co-chair for transport at UN Commission for Sustainable Development in New York,• contributing to EU Framework research projects,• Capacity building for NGOs in enlargement states including training on the “transport acquis”

Aiding the drafting of legislative proposals and Communications covering air quality, acidification and eutrophication, vehicle emissions and fuel quality and CO2 and cars.

Contributing to the European Policy Office communications team work on the Global launch of the report “Taking Nature into Account. This Communications role was mainly focused on European media outlets as well as providing support to other regional Comms teams across WWF.

A small NGO acting as a bridge between the development and environment movements engaging all stakeholder groups including NGOs and multilateral or bilateral agencies and institutions. The main work was planning “Between the Summits – Down to Earth”, a conference at the end of 1993 linking the NGO agreements made at the Rio Earth Summit to the 1995 Copenhagen Social Summit and subsequently disseminating the results at global fora such as the UN Commission for Sustainable Development and the 1994 UN global development conference for small island developing states. Major policy areas included Trade, Climate change, Small Island States, Rural Development and Food Security, and Transport and Energy.
