Landpower is the leading wholesaler of agricultural machinery throughout Australasia. We have over 50 branches (owned and franchised CLAAS Harvest Centres and multi franchise dealers) across New Zealand and Australia. My role is to oversee the Finance & Leasing function across our group.Reporting to the CFO, some of my responsibilities involve; design, budgeting and reporting on our finance subsidy schemes. Managing and developing our funder relationships and key finance partner schemes (i.e. DLL). Training and education around finance product offering. Development of sales process around inclusion and use of finance. Various other project work as required within the business.Our long term challenge is how we support our sales team, customers and industry evolving from standard purchase options (“I like to own my equipment”) and focus on rate comparison mentality, to what I will feel is the inevitability of more structured leasing and total cost of ownership modelling. TransDiesel (“TDX”) brought me to NZ to establish their in-house finance offering and draw on my experience in setting up and running a vendor program. Our objective was to support our customers purchasing the group's equipment and provide them with competitive and creative solutions to financing.In 3 years I facilitated over $55m worth of finance agreements with our panel of lenders. We encouraged customers to look at what their business / cashflow needs and allow us to support them with solutions that matched this.Key achievements would include but not limited to; developing the funder panel to support all variation of customer and deal size, develop and establish in-house lease offering and documentation alongside rental products and successfully establish facilities for some of NZLs largest customers. TDX is the authorised New Zealand distributor for Volvo Construction Equipment, Yanmar Construction Equipment, Perkins engines, Kohler and Lombardini engines and generators, Shell oils & lubricants, Allison transmissions, Donaldson, Sakura, Griffin filtration and exhaust products.

Main areas of focus in the interim:• Obtain thorough knowledge of Haydock’s “front to back” processes in relation to its asset finance business; to document said processes and provide analysis for improvement, with a particular focus on streamlining, automation, elimination of workarounds and duplication of effort.• Develop a deep understanding of how the current business processes are managed on the current systems and to identify gaps and/or workarounds in system usage. Make appropriate recommendations of a workflow nature.• Identify and document the key components of an external user portal, and to initiate development of an appropriate portal with a preferred supplier.• To participate in and make recommendations on the options available to Management with regard to a suitable IT platform on which the company’s existing finance products can be captured, managed within proposal stage, underwritten, paid-out and life-cycle managed. To additionally make recommendations with regard to IT platform options for additional / future sources of business and product ranges. • To identify key areas where staff training should be provided and to make recommendations on the nature of that training; and to assist, where practical, on the delivery of training.

On joining Ballyvesey Finance (“BF”) I had the joy of starting with a clean slate. However, this meant no funder trading agreements for introducing business, no credit lines for placing group cap-ex and just me to support the entire Ballyvesey Group both in the UK and Ireland for: Trailer Manufacturer - MontraconTruck & Van dealerships – Mercedes, Scania, DAF & FiatPlant & Machinery depots – numerous brands Within the first couple of years I developed a funding panel to cover the spectrum of opportunities we received from the above, ranging from sole-traders to large corporate entities and offering the finance products and rates appropriate to all of these customers. This entailed numerous presentations to banks and funding houses with attendees from front-end sales to Managing Directors. Gaining their buy-in and trust for our Group post-recession meant demonstrating how I wanted to grow mutually beneficial, long term partnerships with them – not just transactional broker type setups.In our first full year I introduced just over £7m for our customers, placed £10m of cap-ex for the group and had established 6 strong funding partners who we still work with. This has grown to a team of 5 BF sales reps placing over £40m of customer business to a panel of nearly 20 lenders.My role over these years has covered many angles of the finance industry; customer, supplier, vendor partner, broker, funder on our own book and so on; this has helped build an appreciation of the work that goes on at all levels, not just within in my business but also in our funders organisations, customers businesses and supplier’s setups.The key to success in all of this though has been building true business partnerships with whoever I’m dealing with. I’ve always strived to maintain high expectations of myself and how I represent the business and conduct myself professionally in whatever arena I am in.

As an independant broker I enjoyed supporting my customers with “entire business” solutions.Being a broker through 2yrs of a global recession had certainly 'matured' my approached to underwriting and given me a great deal of experience going forward. Up / cross sell additional bank products and opportunities (invoice financing, re-banking opportunities, mortgaging, etc).In 5 years moving through the ranks, receiving 4 promotions in my last 3 years and becoming a valued Relationship Manager for Lombard in Wales.Also spent 12 months working in HQ as project support, redesigning the entire front end sales system. Rapidly having to understand the functions, process and paperwork required in the business from lead to payout.
