Garrett Williams currently works as a Sustainability Engineer for the Design for Sustainability team in the Boeing Commercial Aircraft business unit of The Boeing Company. In this role, he is the subject matter expert in sustainability assessments, methods, and tools. He conducts lifecycle assessments on commercial aircraft and technologies to understand their impact on the environment in terms of global warming potential, acidification, ozone depletion, and water consumption to name a few. The challenge is being able to use these tools in a way that drives decision-making during the technology development and design processes. He has developed novel and innovative approaches to solve this problem and leading the path to implementation. With sustainability being a relatively new topic to the Boeing Company, Garrett is leading the technical skill development of engineers across the enterprise. He’s been asked to support other business units in training engineers and conducting assessments for Boeing Research & Technology, Boeing Defense and Space Systems as well as Boeing Global Services. Prior to joining the Design for Sustainability Team, Garrett was a member of the Engineering Career Foundation Program. It is a two-year rotation program for early career engineers to rotate between business units and experience the entire lifecycle of designing, producing, and supporting an airplane program. In this program, he rotated through F-22 Raptor Program as a liaison engineer. He spent six months as designer for the Boeing Next Program on the Cargo Air Vehicle. He supported the F-15 Program as a Flight Test engineer, and spent his last rotation supporting the Product Development Design for Sustainability Team. He entered the Boeing Company in Boeing Research & Technology as a stress analyst. He spent those two years exploring topology optimization and additive manufacturing, developing composite materials and manufacturing methods, supporting Phantom Works on a proprietary program, and designing primary structure for the Phantom Express Space Plane. Garrett has a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Howard University and a Master of Science in Environmental, Energy, and Chemical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. He expects to receive a Master in Business Administration from the University of Washington in the Spring of 2024.
