I am a very experienced engineer who prides himself on bringing innovation and a commercial orientation to my work. My specialism is in mechanical design with significant experience of manufacturing low to medium volume highly technical scientific instrumentation. I started as a trainee engineer working with machine tools, and in fabrication and precision engineering workshops before undertaking and completing a first-class honours degree in mechanical engineering.I have substantial experience working in a precision engineering environment designing products to budgets and specifications so that they meet market and volume manufacturing requirements where the importance of quality and reliability are paramount. This experience also includes working with design contractors and overseas partners to achieve project objectives.I have held senior management positions including general manager, production, operations, and engineering director roles which have given me a rounded commercial awareness and an understanding of working to budget and resource constraints. During this time in senior positions, I remained close to the engineering and manufacturing functions, promoting to my teams the importance of providing quality products and services to our customers.My passion for engineering and product design have remained with me and through projects at work and at home I have continued to keep up to date with CAD tools such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD being involved with complex designs using fabricated and precision machined parts, mouldings, castings, extrusions etc. I have developed a good understanding across diverse technologies of what works and how to develop products that are fit for purpose and compatible with volume manufacturing processes. These technologies include precision engineering, high pressure and UHV equipment, cryogenics, magnetism, automation, and electronics.
