    My research at Western dealt with microbial subsurface repopulation following an in situ smouldering remediation technology known as STAR. Following STAR, not only is the contaminant removed, but the physical and chemical properties of the subsurface are changed, making it difficult for microbes to repopulate the treated area. However, microbial repopulation of the treatment area is important for soil stability and nutrient cycling, and will impact the health of site soil following STAR treatment. In this study, natural in situ re-population of a STAR treated zone was observed at a field site in New Jersey, and a bench scale flow-through column experiment was carried out to investigate the rate of repopulation in a controlled environment, as well as the effects of adding biostimulating amendments during the repopulation process.
