I'm Gene, an experienced Senior Manager of UX, Head of UX, Director of UX with a proven track record in user experience strategy, design systems, and user research. In my career, by using data judiciously in driving design, I have driven tens of millions both in value generated and in cost savings for companies. I've helped companies gain hundreds of percents in efficiency. Together we have saved countless lives. I am interested primarily in workflows and how people get work done, or not, using their existing systems, and that means observing and learning from people, tracing their problems into our design, testing how well our designs address them, fixing those designs, and iterating. If you're hiring and you don't want to do these things or don't feel the need to, then, in the words of The Waterboys, we will not be lovers.I am skilled in team management, process optimization, and cross-functional collaboration across manufacturing, financial services, aerospace, and healthcare sectors. I'm also adept at leading UX initiatives, creating standard design systems, and establishing user research cultures. When you hire me, I am committed to enhancing product usability, reducing time to value, and mentoring UX professionals. I've been recognized for innovative solutions and successful project management in complex domains. I am currently reading a fair amount of design history and criticism as well as literature on ecological psychology, particularly around perception-action.Outside of work I practice two traditional styles of Southern Chinese kung fu: hung gar (洪拳), choy lay fut (蔡李佛). I continue to play the french horn and have recently revived an interest in electronic music, and I also spend time with my family. I've led dozens of walking tours of Chicago Chinatown; I have spoken about Chinese American history on TV, in live presentations, and written about it.
