About Georgie Smith

A long and rich career in publishing has been instrumental in allowing me to craft engaging graphic design. I excel in creating long form documents such as magazines, annual reports and modern slavery documents. I love transforming reams of text into an impactful design that will resonate with the reader. There is nothing I don't know about the production process and spent 15 years liaising with everyone from publication editors to journalists, image enhancers and printers, then pair those skills with the fact that I have freelanced (remotely) for myself for 10 years where I have had to do everything from marketing myself and my work to creating the work and overseeing print production and quality control, then you have a very safe pair of hands. • The Courier Mail
Senior Graphic Designer / Digital Designer
The Courier Mail May 2010 - May 2011
    Brisbane, Australia
Senior Graphic Designer with NewsCentral at Queensland Newspapers. NewsCentral was a department created by merging production staff from Quest, Courier Mail and Sunday Mail Newspapers and magazines. It was at this time that I learnt to efficiently work remotely. Editors and journalists would email a brief to a central email box requesting a infographic or magazine layout they would like produced and then a design sent back to them for changes and eventually final sign off. Every newspaper and magazine had a unique style guide that had to be remembered, whilst working to a different deadline for every publication meant this job was not for the faint-hearted.I also spent 6 months working as a digital designer for couriermail.com

    Brisbane, Australia
Designed and created a 32 page 'Home' magazine for The Courier Mail. As art director I attended weekly briefings with the Editor and Deputy Editor of the magazine and came up with photoshoot ideas for the magazine and then briefed the photographer, laid out the magazine pages and checked proofs before sending the magazine to print.I then moved back to Qweekend magazine as a senior graphic designer. I attended weekly editorial meetings with the whole team to brainstorm photoshoot ideas for upcoming editions as well as attending and styling weekly photoshoots taken of food at Sirromet Wines. • News Corp Australia

News Corp Australia Jan 1999 - Jan 2002
    Sydney, Australia
I began my time with News Corp Australia as a senior graphic designer working for their marketing department creating material for both the Sunday Telegraph and Daily Telegraph in the lead up to and during the Sydney Olympics in 2000. After the Olympics I moved into the editorial department to create design for both the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph. Always working to a tight daily deadline to create editorial feature liftouts on that days big news story, such as September 11. At other times creating educational magazine series that were developed for school aged children. These magazine series would mean that I was managing and giving art direction to several staff members as well as creating the artwork, working to tight deadlines and checking proofs before they went to press.
