About Glenn Yeffeth

"After decades in publishing and having helped create many New York Times bestsellers (including my memoir), I thought I knew everything there was to know about book publishing. But BenBella showed me something new. BenBella is to publishing what Southwest Airlines is to aviation. They redefine the industry paradigm. In a profession that has not distinguished itself in decades, this independent publisher is changing the way the book business works. They are the future of publishing.”- Jodee Blanco, New York Times bestselling author and publishing industry consultantFounded and runs one of the leading independent publishers, with 35 national bestsellers and over $100 million in revenue generated. Distributed by Penguin Random House.Fifteen years of management consulting, then reinvention as a book publisher. BenBella was formed to bring cutting-edge marketing and technology ideas to publishing. BenBella's success is based on three core principles. One, careful acquisition of a limited number of excellent projects. Two, a culture and team that support genuine author-publisher collaboration in every aspect of the publishing process. Three, a deep commitment to marketing that extends from acquisition and editorial to cover design and marketing.BenBella Books is a publishing boutique that aims to be the publisher of choice for a select group of authors who value personal attention, a partnership philosophy, flexibility, and a creative approach to marketing. On certain high-potential projects, BenBella offers extraordinary royalties that are significantly better than those offered by the large publishing houses.

  • Lante Corporation
    Chief Strategy Officer
    Lante Corporation 2000 - 2001
    Greater Chicago Area
I was brought in by the CEO to head up the strategy practice for this Internet development consultancy just as the Internet bubble burst. Unfortunately, as part of our survival strategy, we eliminated the strategy practice I was brought in to run. I was given the option of staying on, but with my whole team being let go I felt I had to leave as well. Also, I'd decided it was time for me to do something completely different. After six months of playing with various ideas, I decided to form BenBella Books.
  • Diamond Technology Partners
    Partner, Strategy Practice
    Diamond Technology Partners 1999 - 2000
    Greater Chicago Area
I was a senior partner heading up Internet strategy projects for Fortune 500 companies in consumer goods and financial services industries. This was a fun but crazy time to be an Internet consultant, because everyone was obsessed with creating Internet spinoffs (which in a few cases wound up going public and having greater market values than their parent companies). But for most businesses this didn't make sense, and I usually recommended an Internet strategy that integrated on-line with physical (what we used to call "clicks and bricks"). A lot of clients didn't want to hear this. Fortunately we've gotten past this phase and on-line/off-line integration is now ubiquitous.
  • Csc Index
Managing Director, Csc Index Europe/Dallas Office
    Csc Index 1990 - 1999
    Chicago, Dallas, London
CSC Index could be a case study in the power of the book.I joined in 1990, just as Michael Hammer (who had a relationship with Index) published “Reengineering Work: Don’t Automate, Obliterate” in Harvard Business Review. Three years later Hammer, and our CEO, James Champy, published REENGINEERING THE CORPORATION: A MANIFESTO FOR BUSINESS REVOLUTION. The book was a runaway bestseller, and transformed Index from an IT consultancy much like Nolan Norton into a much larger business consultancy specializing in large-scale strategic change projects. In its prime Index was a fantastic place to work. We were growing fast, we were risk takers and we were insanely ambitious. We aimed at literally redesigning corporate America and while we had our failures, we had some unbelievable successes. We were also a fundamentally nice group of folks who treated each other, and our clients, with care and respect (something I've tried to reproduce at BenBella.)I started in Chicago and then opened our Dallas office, whose growth and profitability exceeded our plans by a substantial margin. Later (after our best days, sadly) I ran our European operations, including the running of Kalchas, a London-based strategy consultancy we acquired in the late 1990's. Again, I had the good fortune to revive the European business, dramatically growing revenue, and, even more, profitability. Unfortunately Index overall was not prospering, and the decision was made to integrate Index with the rest of CSC. I left soon afterwards.
  • Nolan, Norton & Co.
    Senior Manager
    Nolan, Norton & Co. 1985 - 1990
Nolan Norton was founded to help non-IT managers deal with their rapidly growing (and incomprehensible) information technology (then often data processing) departments.Since I was hired right out of school knowing virtually nothing about IT, I was well-positioned to relate to these frazzled non-IT executives. But since I was supposed to be advising them, I had to learn fast. Fortunately I was aided by Nolan Norton's extensive methodologies that allowed us to assess IT organizations rapidly and efficiently.Nolan Norton was brilliant at using methodology to allow bright but not particularly knowledgeable consultants operate effectively. I learned a great deal there, including all the basics of how to be a consultant.Later, I was manager for David Norton's Performance Measurement Research Program, which developed into (without my help) the “balanced scorecard” methodology, the bestselling book The Balanced Scorecard, and the firm Renaissance Solutions.
