DEM Solutions Ltd, started in 2004, and was an independent venture capital backed SME until its acquisition by Altair Inc in Nov 2019; It is a profitable and innovative software company specialising in engineering simulation solutions to a range of very well-known blue-chip global customers across many industries via strong channels and partners. Since inception, it has sold over £47m of its technology and has created over 550 man years of employment. Direct subsidaries in Japan, South Korea, USA. 17 different nationalities - truly cosmopolitan.Main Achievements:Successful exit to a strong trade buyer, Altair, and then implementing integration whilst still seeing double digit growth.Played a pivotal role in building a profitable, sustainable and credible company, with a strong robust governance platform across many distribution channels and partners.Secured significant equity, awards and loan funding from banks, institutions, economic development agencies and R&D credits totalling over £6m.Two successful office migrations, to support its expansion.

The Audit and Risk Process Committee is empowered by the Council of CIMA to monitor the integrity of CIMA’s financial statements, and to monitor and review the global corporate reporting, risk management and internal control principles of CIMA, together with oversight of the appointment and work of the internal auditor (Grant Thornton) and external auditor (PWC). The Audit and Risk Process Committee has a specific responsibility to ensure that CIMA’s financial and other controls are properly understood and exercised by the Council, its various Committees, Regional Boards, the Chief Executive and the Senior Management Team.

ECT was an early stage SME specialising in the development of dynamic insulation systems that transform building envelopes into heat exchangers and sources of fresh ventilation air. The company has effectively been mothballed awaiting a change in UK housing regulations since 2014. Two of the same institutions that backed DEM Solutions are backing this company and the role is now unpaid and is there to merely ensure, for them, that this slow heartbeat is maintained pending the anticipated regulation changes.

Previous and subsequent roles with ERRS include Treasurer and Secretary.

Whilst this headline relates to the "top job", my involvement has spanned 1994 till 2021, in voluntary but rewarding capacities. The experience the roles have brought and the long lasting friendships that have been forged, have been of the highest value.CIMA is a professional body that at the time was servicing 180,000 members and students worldwide, with a global turnover of c£45m, employing c400 staff. Specific roles were leading CIMA as a member of its de facto Board of Directors, responsible for the governance, strategy & policy setting, determining its vision, mission, values and space and holding senior office as one of its 4 Honorary Officers from 2005-2009 and serving on the Audit & Risk Committee from 2012 onwards. Was a member of CIMA Council from 1996 to 2009, including being Chairman of four of its seven main policy committees at various times from 1998 to 2004, presiding over syllabus reviews in 2000 and 2004 as well as representing the Edinburgh Branch as President (1993-1995), and the Scotland Area as Chairman (1998-2000). Has been a practical experience assessor for CIMA since 1994, participating in over 10,000 candidate assessments world-wide, of which over 4,000 performed at face-to-face interviews. A skilled interviewer!Served on the Nominations Committee of AICPA 2016-2018.Main Achievements:Youngest ever elected council member (1996) and youngest Institute President for over 50 years (2007)2006 - 2008 Director, Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies LtdAs vice president and president of CIMA, acted as a Director on CCAB which is the body overseeing the accountancy profession in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Its Board comprised the presidents and senior vice presidents of each of the six chartered accounting bodies in the UK and its purpose was to guide and represent the profession with government and regulatory oversight bodies.

Finance DirectorEPS (an engineering software and services company) was an independent SME until March 2004, when it was acquired by the major US service company Weatherford Inc. Operated out of Edinburgh, Houston, Caracas, Villahermosa, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow and Dubai, employing superbly qualified and highly educated staff. Served as Financial Director and Company Secretary as well as serving on the board of all EPS’ subsidiaries (USA, Mexico & Venezuela); responsible for all corporate governance, financial, human resource, tax, legal, property, pensions and administrative matters affecting the EPS Group and its overseas interests, including handling and oversight of the legal and accounting administration of a joint venture between EPS and a UK Plc.Main Achievements:Guided successful sale of EPS to Weatherford Inc (2004)Secured banking facilitiesSuccessfully guided expansion of EPSIntroduced institutional fundingDisposal of EPS’ equipment manufacturing divisionProject led and achieved Investor In People standard 3 times from 1994.

Unisys Corporation is one of the world’s largest information technology companies, employing some 110,000 people in the 80s. Livingston was a manufacturing and R&D facility, being part of the Computer Systems Group, which had some 26,000 people. Had been responsible for the daily operation of the financial analysis department covering Engineering, Product Assurance, Manufacturing and Administration divisions’ financial plans,monthly outlooks and performance analysis statements. Also prepared formal business case analysis of major products being released from development to production.Main Achievements:Unisys Short Term Achievement Award (1989) - for automating the financial analysis system.Unisys Achievement Award for Professional Excellence (Bronze1989 & Silver 1990 (Top 1%)).
