About Gianpaolo Balsamo

I am an expert in Research-to-Operation (R2O) transfer of Earth System Science (ESS). My interests have spanned the development of global models of the Earth’s biosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and the anthroposphere, with particular focus on the role of the surface in the Earth systems models used daily for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and Climate reanalyses. My main professional goal is to leverage Science & Technology, to achieve the most accurate Digital Twins of the Earth applied to enhance Weather and Seasonal Prediction, and to sustain Environmental and Climate monitoring activities, in support of informed decision-making.My education background includes a degree in Physics, a doctorate in Meteorology (PhD), professorial (HDR/Habilitation) and managerial (MIT Leadership&Innovation, Agile Project Management) accreditations.I have previously worked for Italian, French, Canadian Meteorological Centres, focusing on modelling the Earth’s surface (soil, snow, vegetation, lakes and rivers), the surface-atmosphere interactions (atmospheric boundary-layer, ocean mixed-layer, and coupling of surface fluxes) and data assimilation (Variational methods, Kalman filters, and Machine Deep Learning approaches) applied to Earth Observations (both from Satellite remote-sensing and ground in-situ networks). In 2006 I have joined the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), an intergovernmental multi-site organisation supported by 35 States & entrusted by the European Union to operate the Copernicus Services for Atmospheric Monitoring and Climate Change (CAMS, C3S). In my daily work I enjoyed collaborating with a Team of leading experts at ECMWF and in different Universities & Research Institutes World-wide.From 2019 I have been supporting the Politecnico di Torino educational programmes as invited Professor for the Master in Climate-change Mitigation & Adaptation solutions. In 2024 I have joined the World Meteorological Organisation, part of the United Nations specialised agencies. WMO, supported by 193 Nations, provides world leadership & expertise in international cooperation for the delivery and use of high-quality data & authoritative weather, climate, hydrological, and environmental services by its Members, to improve the well-being of All.My responsibilities: Lead & Coordinate the WMO Global Greenhouse Gas Watch. My specialties: Earth System Modelling, Earth Observation Data Assimilation, Numerical Weather Prediction, Environmental & Climate Monitoring. My proclivities: Communication, Multidisciplinarity, Coordination.

These elements of the Earth system are represented using a range of models to simulate the energy/water/carbon cycle continuous exchanges with atmosphere, that can support extended range prediction capabilities, via Coupled Processes (CP). Collaborations and Partnerships support the modelling research via numerous international actions involving the ECMWF Member-States, the European Commission Copernicus & Research Programmes, European Satellite Agencies and active participation in World Meteorological Organisation's Committees. As Team-Leader I have been responsible for the Coupled Processes (CP) Group, part of the Earth System Modelling (ESM) Section of the Research Department (RD) at ECMWF. Our role as a Team consisted in adopting new advances in parameterizations for land/ocean thermodynamics, currents/waves/surface-atmosphere interaction and biogeochemistry processes, that are most relevant to produce accurate forecasts on a range of lead-time between a day and a year ahead. Natural/Anthropogenic surfaces and their distribution are described with the aid of satellite remote sensing information. Our Team research and development aimed at improved understanding of surface processes and a more seamless coupling of the different Earth system components to enhance the accuracy/usefulness of weather/environmental predictions and climate reanalysis.Among the significant publications during this period of work, the ERA5 C3S Climate reanalysis supporting the Copernicus State of Climate and the CAMS Greenhouse Gas reanalysis:Hersbach et al., 2020: The ERA5 global reanalysis, Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, https://rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/qj.3803Agusti-Panareda, A. et al., 2023: The CAMS greenhouse gas reanalysis from 2003 to 2020, EGUsphere, https://doi.org/10.5194/acp-23-3829-2023 Show less

The first and most significant tasks have been the redesign and implementation of the new Hydrology - Tiled ECMWF Surface Scheme for Exchanges over Land (H-TESSEL) that included major additions and revisions in all the hydrologically active surface components. H-TESSEL became operational in November 2007 and it has been continuously improved in each of the subsequent Integrated Forecasting System’s cycles, with a growing Team of developers, both at ECMWF and in collaboration with Partners Research Institutes.
