I have been developing new systems for a multi-national freight forwarding organisation. This role involved analysis of business requirements and development of the eventual solution to a tight deadlines. I was also responsible for managing a number of off-shore development staff based in India.

Jul 2003 - Dec 2003

Development Manager

Dcs Transport And Logistics

Nottingham

In this role, I was responsible for managing a team of developers working on customer-driven projects from initial inception through to implementation. Day-to-day responsibilities included setting and monitoring budgets, progress reporting and ensuring that solutions were delivered to schedule. The position involved extensive travel in order to liaise with a broad customer base spread across Europe. Some projects were multi-million pound developments, including software to enable the business partnership between DuPont and their freight forwarder. This allowed them to seamlessly interact from initial request for transport through to a monthly self-billing phase.Aside to this role, during this period I was also an internal auditor for the company. To fulfil this role I was required to audit various business processes to ensure conformance to the company’s BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 and TickIT standards, as well as evaluating and developing standard procedures. These processes were subject to external audit to maintain the company’s accreditation. During this period I was also responsible for the checking of all software released to ensure that standards were enforced and good coding practices were in evidence. Part of this process utilised the SmartTest400 software suite to enable rigorous known test cases to be performed. It is a little known fact that the lycra in your clothes, or indeed the Teflon in your frying pan was delivered on time after passing through an interface I developed with DuPont and their logistics partner Khuene and Nagel.

May 1998 - Jun 2003

Technical Manager

Dcs Transportand Logistics

Nottingham, United Kingdom

CSI had now changed their name to DCS Transport and Logistics. This coincided with my move to Nottingham. At the time I had designed an accounting system aided by the managing director. This accounting system was to be an integral part of our global freight solution. Initially the development was started in Leeds and then moved to Nottingham. We were working towards a tight deadline for a new Japanese customer. This company has a global presence and much of my time was dedicated to designing and developing interfaces to facilitate the more specific needs of particular geographic locations.Overall responsibilities in this role included overseeing customer development projects to ensure delivery of software as specified, to budget and on time, and managing development teams, which included completing yearly staff appraisals.Throughout this period I was also regularly making trips to IBM Southbank in my role as IBM UK SQL tutor. Giving presentations or training is something I really enjoy, even though it can be very demanding.

May 1995 - May 1998

Project Technical Lead

Computing Services For Industry Ltd

Leeds

By now I had gained a reputation for creating fast and efficient solutions. I was asked by the company director if I would like to join the special projects department he was planning to set up. I took up the offer and was there at the birth of DCS Transport and Logistics. I became involved with many European and UK customers looking to implement the freight forwarding solution we had developed. My main roles here were designing and developing interfaces to other software solutions, such as accounting and warehousing that the customers utilised in their business. This included extensive European travel and occasional working on-site in Europe.Part of my remit in this role was to appraise several application development tools. From the many tools considered it was decided to implement Thenon change management software.

May 1992 - May 1995

Senior Analyst/Programmer

Computing Services For Industry Ltd

Leeds

This position required me to liaise with project leaders to ascertain and evaluate efficient programming solutions for customers’ business requirements. My first assignment was to develop an asynchronous communications system utilising its own flow control. This system was used to send medical records between doctors’ surgeries and health insurers.Further to this I was given the opportunity to flex my analysis skills in the design of a telesales system for a computer consumables company. The resulting system had to be fast and responsive and interface to BPCS for stock enquires and order placing. IBM showed interest in this project and eventually had the software sent to their Rochester labs for performance testing. They were very impressed with the results. This led to SSA (the authors of BPCS) buying the rights to include some of the development in their package and calling it Fast Order Entry. I believe this is when I first became familiar with SQL.

Apr 1990 - May 1992

Analyst/Programmer

Leeds, United Kingdom

My responsibilities included writing in-house programs from technical specifications. All programs were subject to rigorous testing procedures as the area of business that I worked in was electronic point of sale (EPOS). The software I developed here had only a small overnight window in which to complete complex transactions with over 600 Burton group stores every night. Many functions had to be controlled by sophisticated CL programs.

Nov 1989 - Apr 1990

Analyst Programmer

S R Gent

Barnsley

I was responsible for the maintenance and development of the distribution system for the transportation of finished garments to the retailer. Including developing links for the receipt and confirmation of orders via the Tradanet EDI system. As an in-house developer, one responsibility which I found enjoyable and interesting was the disaster recovery and involvement in maintenance and upgrading of the company’s IBM System38 to AS/400 hardware.
