Mr. Smith's affiliation with the American Red Cross began in 1993 when he served as a disaster services volunteer with the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter in San Francisco. He has since amassed an impressive record of service and success in disaster services, volunteer and youth recruitment, program development, training, marketing and fundraising. Throughout his career, Mr. Smith has served as a senior strategist and public advocate for the Red Cross, crafting vital public and private partnerships with universities, businesses, community and faith-based organizations and government agencies. Prior to assuming his current role, Mr. Smith served as the Regional Director for the Disaster Services Program that covers ten counties in the San Francisco Bay Area...the program where he began his Red Cross career. During his twenty-one year career he has directed departments and efforts at Red Cross National Headquarters including disaster training development and training delivery support and; external relations and partnership management. In 2000, he joined the national executive staff as the vice president of Volunteers, Youth and Nursing. In that role he was responsible for volunteer, youth/young adult and nursing program development and enhancement and Chapter volunteer management program support. He received this senior staff appointment following successful assignments as Director of Disaster Services in Columbus, Ohio and managing the Technical Support and Planning unit in the Bay Area...providing leadership in disaster planning, mitigation, response and recovery, while overseeing disaster program management, community disaster education and statewide training programs. In addition to representing the American Red Cross nationally and internationally, He worked throughout the United States and overseas on numerous disaster relief operations, including floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, hazardous materials incidents and transportation disasters.
