UCSF Transplant Surgery: Managing Director, University of California San Francisco, Clinical Pancreas Islet Research Program. I have thirty years of extensive research experience and within the past twenty years in the field of islet isolation and transplantation in Clinical Human, Rodent, and Primate Models. During that time I’ve published over 140 peer reviewed journal articles and have served as the director for the UCSF Islet Production Core; responsible for isolating human pancreatic islets for clinical transplantation and for basic science research. Managing allogeneic and autologous clinical islet production and transplantation facility requires a comprehensive knowledge of GMP and GTP regulations. Throughout my career, I’ve accumulated considerable experience in developing and utilizing important in vitro immune-based assays and in vivo bone marrow, organ, and cellular transplantation tolerance models (multiple rodent models, etc.). I have experience participating in multiple INDs (Phase I & III) for cellular- and biologics-based therapies; including the production of monoclonal antibodies (OKT3ala-ala), NIH sponsored allogeneic islet transplantation, and autologous islets production for patients suffering from Pancreatitis and requiring total pancreatectomy. I also have also extensive knowledge of multiple immune monitoring assays (mixed lymphocyte reactions and cytokine detection assays), functional islet testing and assessment, and continue to study embryonic stem cell derived insulin producing cells for several pre-clinical studies.

UCSF Transplant Surgery: Techincal Director, University of California San Francisco Islet and Cellular Transplantation Facility, San Francisco, California. Management and directorship of the core cGMP human Islet production facility. Provide high quality islets for clinical islet transplants and provide high quality islets, from multiple species, for basic and applied research; independent of and directly affiliated with my managerial role of the UCSF-Diabetes Education and Research Center (DERC) Islet Production Core Facility. Scientific and administrative management of the islet production facility, including budget development, scientific direction and development of services, direct supervision of facility space and personnel; which includes two employees. Progect manager of an Immune Monitoring Core Facility were transplant recipient samples will be tested for alloimmune and autoimmune response during their immunosuppression drug treatment.

I have over ten years of experience in isolating human pancreatic islets for clinical transplantation; including an extensive research experience within the realm of islet isolation and transplantation in both rodents and primates. My involvement in managing an allogeneic and autologous clinical islet isolation and transplantation production facility includes a comprehensive knowledge of GMP and GTP regulations. During my career I’ve accumulated considerable experience in developing and utilizing important immune based assays (rodent models, flow cytometry); IND Phase I cellular and reagent based therapies, clinical immune monitoring (mixed lymphocyte reactions and cytokine detection assays), functional islet testing and assessment of both mammalian islets and embryonic stem cell derived insulin producing cells.
