I founded Tondo Smart Lighting Systems in 2016 because smart cities are the future of our world, and lamp poles are the ideal infrastructure for mounting smart-city systems. Like Wayne Gretsky and his famous puck quote, I innovate where tech is headed: I devise sustainable solutions for the challenges cities face now, and for the ones they’ll be facing the decades to come. If this sounds like prophecy, keep in mind: I’m a finance and accounting professional, and making predictions is what I do. As a member of the accounting-consulting services team for a global services firm (PwC), and then as the CFO for a major Israeli retail chain, I didn’t just analyze revenue streams, manage cash flow, negotiate contracts, evaluate suitable prospects, and ensure compliance—although I did all these things, too. Most important, I honed my analytical skills in linking expectations about the future to the value-added we can bring to the table. Speaking of value-added, the knowledge I gained through my experience in Israel’s elite army program for developing new technologies, Talpiot, makes me that rare bird among CEOS: the one whose technical expertise matches his know-how in the areas of finance, quality, regulatory, operations, marketing, and sales. Or, as I like to put it, I’ve got the skill set needed to create and bring technology to life—and the skillset required to build and grow a business at the same time. After all, when it comes to entrepreneurship, the bottom line—and with my accounting background, how could I resist the pun?— is, you need to be able to see opportunities and understand what it takes to launch and gain scale in a profitable way.
